They’re a nuisance, but silverfish aren’t nearly as dangerous as other pests like cockroaches, mice, termites or bed bugs. They don’t carry diseases that humans or pets can catch, and they don’t cause widespread destruction like termites or rats. Home and yard maintenance can also keep pests away. Seal windows, patch any holes or cracks, and put screens on the vents to prevent bugs, rodents, and other uninvited guests from coming in.

There is very limited scientific evidence to support the efficacy of essential oils against bed bugs and they are very unlikely to kill the species. However, a 2021 study published by the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) found that compounds in essential oils like clove oil, lemongrass, citronella, and bergamot could repel the insects.
