"Seamus Donohue was a man who knew his subject - lightning. He came to our home quickly, and scheduled installation immediately after we made a decision. The men who came to do the installation were professional, careful and took time to make sure the results were as "invisible" as possible. We hope never to have a lightning strike again at our home, but as the weather patterns change, we fear that is more possible than in the past. We feel more protected after our lightning protection installation. But you never know how successful something is if the proof is in something never happening! But we'll take it."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

You should always turn off a breaker whenever electrical work is being done. This step can prevent electrical shock and injury. Also, if a breaker is repeatedly tripping, it can mean there is an electrical overload, and it should be shut off. You should contact an electrician to figure out the cause. Make sure to review how to turn off your circuit breaker safely if you do it yourself, and follow safety precautions to avoid severe injuries.

A standard three-prong electrical outlet typically lasts for about 15 years with normal use and should be replaced accordingly. GFCI outlets may have a longer lifespan of 15 to 25 years. While some outlets can last longer if used infrequently, they can also fail prematurely. Reasons for early failure include poor wiring, an overloaded circuit, improper grounding or installation, or loose plugs. Signs that an outlet is failing include flickering lights, overheating, a discolored or melted faceplate, plugs that fall out easily, or frequently tripping circuit breakers. It is essential to address faulty outlets promptly to avoid safety hazards, especially in homes older than 15 years.

Yes. Like other trained specialists, electricians need to be licensed in their state of operation, and carry specific kinds of insurance required by that state, which usually includes general liability insurance and surety bonds. When choosing an electrician, always pay attention to these details, and avoid electricians who can’t offer proof. When it comes to wiring, you want experienced, trained pros doing the work.

No. When applied properly, electrical tape is designed to be an insulating material with high resistance to electricity. It can reinforce electrical connections and act as a safeguard to help ensure the electrical current stays within its designated pathways. However, it’s important to note that it can break down over time and you should never use it as a replacement for electrical wire caps.

Window ACs use 500 to 1,400 watts per hour of electricity, while mini-splits use 500 to 700 watts per hour. However, if you need to cool multiple zones in your house, your mini-split can use as much as 2,000 watts per hour. How often you run your system will impact how much electricity you use (and how much you pay per month).
