"Star provided the windows, flooring, and stone/tile for our backsplashes and around our fireplace for our new home we had built in 2018. The process selecting the materials was pretty smooth, except they had a pretty small selection for some items. The problems started when they installed our LVP flooring. There were pieces cut too short that eventually moved, exposing the subfloor song the baseboards. It took Star three visits to fix this in our entry way. Now, the same thing has started in our kitchen. Also, they sold us MI windows that have been nothing but problematic. It took them six visits trying to fix the windows before they and the builder decided to replace two of them with casement windows. Now, three years later, those windows are leaking and Star simply told me to pound sand and that I would have to deal with MI on my own. Also, after the LVP flooring was installed the floor started popping when we walk across the living room. As part of the installation, they were supposed to sand down raised areas of the subfloor caused by rain. I don't know if that somehow caused the popping, the weight of the flooring, or what it may have been, but simply reinforcing the subfloor with additional screws would have likely prevented it. Now there isn't an affordable way to fix the popping without pulling up the expensive LVP flooring and replacing it. Thanks, Star. I will never step foot in Star Lumber again. Through example, they have shown time and time again that they don't take care of their customers."

2003 years of experience

Texturite is a company that has been in business since 2003 and continues to serve the greater Wichita area by providing many home remodel services at an affordable price. Texturite specializes in the removal of outdated “popcorn” ceilings which homeowners have been unsatisfied with for years. Popcorn, or as the industry calls it “acoustic”, ceilings were first used in the early 60's and quickly became popular as a low cost way to hide imperfections, which drywall ceilings are bound to have, while having a new look which was appreciated at the time. Unfortunately, popcorn ceilings, as with virtually all home décor from the 60’s, are not meeting the demands of current homeowners and are seen as being outdated and lacking the beauty which homeowners desire. Contrary to this fact, popcorn ceilings are still being used in construction today, predominantly in “starter” homes, for the same reasons that they were used some 65+ years ago. One major problem with these ceilings is that they are typically one of the dirtiest surfaces within one’s home; they collect cobwebs, dust, and water stains and are unable to be cleaned without flaking off. Another major flaw is that when these ceilings become damaged and need to be patched, it is impossible to reapply a texture which will match the rest of the ceiling. Texturite specializes in the removal and transformation of outdated and damaged popcorn ceilings into a new Tuscany style handmade ceiling. Our ceilings are set apart from all other competitors because Texturite is the only company which creates handmade ceilings, not sprayed on by a machine, giving them the character, beauty, and individuality which modern homeowners desire. We also create low profile, modern finishes and textures on existing walls, even over wallpaper. As with every product we offer, these wall finishes and textures are also completely handmade, never created by machines. No need to remove your old paper, we guarantee. These finishes can be any color or colors to match your new or existing decor. Along with ceilings and walls, Texturite is also capable of doing numerous other tasks relating to the updating and upgrading of one’s home such as installation or removal of can lights and other lighting fixtures, and the removal or installation of walls, depending on each individual’s needs. See our website at www.texturite.com or call (316)393-0836 for a free estimate.

"I really can't say enough about this whole team/company. They were responsive, able to react quickly to changes (requests from me as well as a few obstacles that the job presented). The whole team was friendly and showed on time, did the work quickly, efficiently and professionally. For the record - work completed was popcorn ceiling texture removed, new LED lighting installed, replaced old can lights with LED lighting. The crew event sent me a picture of an old (very old) smoke detector, stating they would change them all out for new ones and just charge me for the smoke detectors. I couldn't be more pleased with the results, and the work the whole crew at Texturite completed."

Barndominium Builders questions, answered by experts

The primary reason homes have crawl spaces is so the foundation can reach down below the frost line to avoid dangerous soil movement and structural damage when the ground freezes. They’re more popular in colder climates where the ground freezes down to a few feet, and slabs are most popular in warmer areas where there is no frost line. Crawl spaces also provide a space for utility lines to run where they’re at less of a risk of freezing.

While it’s never too early to start planning for a major home improvement project like a home addition, give yourself at least a month or two to plan and design your addition, find a contractor, and get the permits in order. For larger projects like a second-story addition that require designing with an architect, plan on three to four months of preparation.

On average, the cost of a home builder is about $150 per square foot, but that price can range from around $100 to $400 per square foot or more. That puts the typical price range of a standard, 2,000-square-foot house between $200,000 and $800,000. Some factors that affect the price of hiring a home builder include the following:

  • Location of your home and the living cost in the area

  • Type of foundation and framing you choose

  • Quality of the building materials

  • Footprint and layout of the house

  • Number of stories

  • Builder’s experience

Framing is often the most expensive phase of building a house because it’s time-consuming and requires a lot of materials. It costs between $20,000 and $50,000 on average, depending on materials and labor costs. Before construction begins, it’s possible that purchasing land is the priciest step in the process. Some plots of land sell for $3,000, while others cost upwards of $150,000.

Whether a prefab home is worth it or not will depend on your personal needs and preferences. Overall, prefab homes tend to cost less than traditional homes, although they also tend to have lower resale values. Another thing to consider is that prefab homes usually last 50 to 60 years or longer, while traditional homes last 50 to 100 years or more.
