"I am happy with the job they did. Had an old driveway that needed grading and new gravel top. Also wanted the driveway extended. They showed up with a bobcat, a roller, a paving machine spreader, and a dump truck scraped and leveled the driveway and layed down crushed limestone which compacted well. Close to 800 feet of driveway and they finished same day. The paving machine layed the limestone down nice and even and firm. It was a lot better than dumping it from the tailgate of a dump truck. I felt the price he quoted was fair. They do blacktop paving too but I prefer a more permeable surface."

The amount of value added depends on the materials used, the design, and local market conditions. Concrete is often cited as adding the most value due to its long lifespan, though asphalt may be more desirable in colder climates. The return on investment is greatest when replacing a driveway that is in poor condition; repaving a driveway that is already in good shape will not yield as significant an increase in value.

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. When asphalt cures, it typically changes from a very dark black hue to a lighter, more matte gray color. Cured asphalt also won’t be tacky or sticky to the touch or emit any odors from the asphalt mix. Additionally, the surface of fully cured asphalt won’t deform under any pressure.

While some areas may allow for a slope of up to 20%, this is often the maximum slope for driveways, with a few exceptions of up to 25%. Other regions may have a maximum of 12%, 15%, or 18%, so check with your local building department to ensure you’re laying a driveway that is up to code for your location.

The layer of polymeric sand under the pavers plus the polymeric sand that gets swept into the joints between your pavers holds them in place in a few ways. For one, the gritty texture of the sand helps lock the pavers together. Polymeric sand also contains bonding agents that get activated by water. Polymeric sand will take between 24 and 48 hours to fully cure, so do not walk on your paver walkway before this time.
