"We hired Mark to repair drywall in a few places in our home. He installed drywall on a family room wall, repaired some ceiling issues and master bathroom walls that were a mess from wallpaper. His skill level is very good. Our bathroom walls look a thousand times better and the drywall areas are perfect. His prices were very fair and reasonable. Mark is a personable guy but needs to work on his timeliness. He takes on multiple jobs and has difficulty meeting the original timeline. (Our 4 day project took 11 days.) He can also be a bit messy. It can be difficult to find good pros, especially for smaller jobs. We were pleased with his work and pricing but the timeline was a challenge."

Fencing questions, answered by experts

In most cases, wrought iron fencing will cause your property value to increase. Most types of fence—but especially high-quality wrought iron fences—make your home more secure and deter burglars, which adds to property value. Fences can also help keep children and pets safe, which most homebuyers will appreciate. Wrought iron fences are also highly decorative, and while they don’t provide much privacy, they do add to your home’s curb appeal, which often leads to higher home value.

Regular staining, sealing, and inspecting for rot or insect damage prolongs fence lifespan.

You’ll need to bury the garden fence about 1 foot underground. It’s tempting to save on materials by burying the fence just a couple of inches, but if you do so, determined pests will still be able to dig under the fence and access your plants. Burying your garden fence deep into the soil is an important step that allows you to attach a wire barrier to the fencing.

Burrowing animals (like voles, moles, rabbits, and gophers) can’t dig or chew through this wiring, meaning that you’ll be keeping your prized petunias or your robust veggie garden from being eaten.

Moisture and rot are the largest threat to wooden fences. Stain can help your wood fence last 15 to 20 years, but only if you choose a stain with waterproofing qualities or add a sealant. Oil-based stains create a thicker moisture barrier than water-based stains, though both are mold and mildew resistant. You’ll generally need to re-stain your fence every one to eight years to get full protection.

The lifespan of a picket fence largely depends on its material. Wooden picket fences typically last 10 to 15 years with regular maintenance, while vinyl and composite picket fences can last 20 to 30 years or more due to their resistance to weather, rot, and pests. Metal picket fences often exceed 30 years, especially when properly coated to prevent rust or corrosion.
