"It went very well. I got 5 or 6 estimates from service providers on angie's list, and this was the best one. They cleaned up after themselves and made sure that the area was well cleaned before they left. Rugs were vacuumed and windows cleaned. There were no hidden extra costs. What they said and is what I paid. The owner of the company personally made sure I was satisfied and kept me up to date with any weather issues that would hinder the work."

"We are extremely happy with how our new windows and new front door turned out. After some unexpected challenges with the way our home was built, our installation crew quickly and efficiently adapted to make sure our windows and door were installed with expert care. Every time we see our new beautiful picture window we are left breathless! And our beautiful front door is the perfect upgrade for the look of our home. Thank you RBA!"

"Great experience! Besides repairing two windows, Tim also repaired three cabinets, door handle, flooring and a closet door. Great care was taken with each repair. Both my husband and I are very happy with the quality of the service and are already planning on using them again for our next project. Highly recommended !!!!"

Windows questions, answered by experts

When specifying window sizes, manufacturers use a standard four-digit code system. The first two numbers represent window width, and the last two represent window height. For example, a window with a code of 2917 has dimensions of 2 feet, 9 inches wide by 1 foot, 7 inches high. Windows with even dimensions include zeros as placeholders. For example, a window that is 5 feet wide by 2 feet high would have a code of 5020.

The material around a window is simply called the window frame, but the individual pieces also have different names. The top portion of the frame is called the head, the side pieces are called jambs, and the bottom portion is called the sill. If you have multiple windows next to each other, you’ll also have a mullion, which is the frame piece that separates the individual windows. Windows stacked on top of each other are separated by a horizontal frame piece, which is called a transom.

Wood windows will help keep an old home's charm, but they are more expensive and harder to maintain. Vinyl or fiberglass windows offer the best benefits in terms of durability and ease of care while still somewhat blending into the look and feel of an older home.  If the vinyl or fiberglass looks too out of place, consider adding shutters or something similar. The cost of plantation shutters is about $2,990, but the charm they bring to a home is unmatched.

To find and hire a reputable contractor for an egress window installation, you should first research local professionals and then vet your top candidates. Start by searching for local contractors who specialize in this type of work, read their customer reviews, and examine their website and portfolio. Once you have a shortlist, contact them to ask key questions: Are you licensed and insured? What is your specific experience installing egress windows? Can you provide references from previous customers? Do you perform the work yourself or use subcontractors? What is the estimated project timeline and your current schedule? How do you handle payment?

Whether you need a permit to install a bay window depends on the project's scope. Replacing an existing bay window typically does not require a permit. However, if you are adding a new bay window, requirements can vary. Adding a new bay window to the front of your house usually requires a building permit, while adding one to the side or back of your house often does not. It's always best to check with your local municipality to confirm the specific requirements in your area. Additionally, if you live in a historic district, you should consult your neighborhood association to ensure your project complies with their construction guidelines. If you're unsure about the process, a professional can provide guidance.
