Metz Fine Furniture is run by Rick Metz, a sole proprietor with over 34 years of experience in the industry. He is a native to Cincinnati, Ohio. At the young age of five he received his first erector set, and ironically built a chair. Rick comes from a long line of woodcrafters. His love for designing and building furniture was ignited when he was given an opportunity to build custom pieces while employed by A.B. Closson's, a prominent furniture/ art dealer in the Cincinnati area. In 1986 Rick took a major step towards entrepreneurship, and became the sole proprietor of Metz Fine Furniture Repair. There his talents expanded in blending wood color stains and learning to correct problems from damaged wood or recreating a table corner enjoyed by one of his customer's pets. Rick became locally renowned for his talent and expertise. He found himself overwhelmed by business drawn from customer referrals. His work has been featured in numerous magazine and news stations, including Cincinnati Enquirer, Ohio Magazine, Indiana Hill Living, Hyde Park Living, Best of Cincinnati Magazine, WCPO TV, and WXIX TV. Furniture Refinishing questions, answered by experts

Wood furniture gets sticky when dirt and grime accumulate on the surface. Sometimes, wax coatings and oils are the culprit, but other times, it’s a sign that the finish is failing, and no amount of cleaning your wood furniture will help. Varnish and lacquer can both get sticky as they age, and in this case, you’ll need to refinish the wood to stop the issue.

Yes, there are several wood filler products on the market that look like wood. Your best bet is to take a cabinet door to your local hardware store to match the appropriate wood filler to your door. Some brands make filler that is masked to look like wood and can also be sanded, cut, stained, and painted.

You can certainly seal butcher block countertops, but not permanently. Due to the nature of the materials, it will require resurfacing down the line. This is true no matter what you use to seal the countertop, including polyurethane and mineral oil. Polyurethane will last until the countertop is damaged in some way, and mineral oil should be reapplied every two to three months. To maximize the longevity of the polyurethane sealer, apply two coats.

If you have decided that hiring a professional to refinish your floors will be faster and more satisfactory, you can expect to pay between $1,000 and $2,500. To get a better idea of what your hardwood refinishing project will cost with a professional, multiply the project’s square footage by the average price of $4 per square foot.

The cost to refinish furniture varies significantly depending on the type of furniture, its material, and its age, but the average cost is about $600 per piece. For larger pieces or antique pieces that require greater care, you could pay up to around $1,000 per piece for refinishing. Small pieces of furniture like bar stools or dining chairs usually cost between $100 and $400 each. Your refinishing professional might charge by the hour rather than by piece, in which case you would expect to spend $40 to $100 per hour of work required.
