There are many possibilities for why your shower’s water pressure is low. However, low water pressure in the shower could also indicate a larger issue with your home’s plumbing system.

Hard water isn’t unhealthy. It’s safe to drink, bathe in, and cook with. However, it can make some skin, hair, and scalp problems, such as eczema, worse by affecting the pH balance of your skin and hair. Additionally, some people don’t like the taste of hard water, but it does contain minerals that are important to your overall health, like calcium.

Water softeners have many benefits. The most important one is converting previously hard water—water with too many minerals—to more usable, easier water. When we say easier water, we mean water that’s easier to digest, less harsh on skin and clothes, and builds up less in the water system. Softer water may lead to lower energy costs and will extend the lifespan of all appliances that use water.

It’s not a good idea to oversize your water softener. Doing so will mean the tank doesn’t get full, which can lead to channeling. This leads to a large portion of the resin beads not being utilized and the beads at the bottom of the tank being overused. Over time, this will reduce the efficiency of your system, not to mention that the upfront cost of an oversized softener is unnecessarily high. If you have a timed regeneration cycle rather than a demand-based one, you’ll also spend far more on replacing salt than you need to.

The main difference between water softeners and water filters is that softeners remove hard minerals from the water, while filters have more of a blanket effect, removing all contaminants above a certain size. Filters are also much less expensive to install and protect against bacteria and other impurities. Depending on your water supply, you may need both.
