"Angel and his crew stained my cedar fence June 2024. The job looked great a year later except for the gate for some reason. I called Angel and he came back and stained the gate again at no charge. It looks fantastic. I highly recommend this company for fence staining because they stand behind their work and do a good job. They also communicate very well with updates as to their arrival to do a job."

Small jobs welcome

"Ten Home provided quality repairs, over the top service, excellent response time and accurate cost estimate. The owner kept us updated as to what was done each day and what to expect next. Once the repairs were completed, Ten Home did more than we expected with the deck cleaning and staining. Our deck looks new again and will be good to go for many years. This was so much more cost effective than replacing the deck with composite material and it looks beautiful. I am already looking to Ten Home for my next house project as they do most any type of house repairs. I highly recommend Ten Home."

"The work was performed to my satisfaction - it was meticulously done and I felt that they did not rush the job. They came on at least 3 occasions to put the layers of stain and the final polyurethane coat. They even found that the top of my front door wood trim had never ben stained and they offered to stain it for free. They are courteous, professional and clean up their tools and supplies before they leave for the day. Highly recommend this painter."

"Ray and his team delivered as promised for one day project completed in about 1/2 day (amazing!). They completed the ceiling painting project of 1st floor, tall hallway, and 2nd floor landing in record time. Two coat application, repair for condensation leak, plastering/hand sanding to smooth out shadows from overhead joists/2nd floor. Ceiling is nice and smooth. Prep work was incredible; plastic sheeting everywhere. Final review to touch up a few spots prior to payment. Cleaned up area. Two-year warranty should there be a reemergence of stains covered with ProBlocker. Other contractors vetted would require 2-days, no or 1 year warranty, and in many cases only provide one coat of paint for higher price. Ray visited at start to prep Felix and the crew on finer details. Ended up costing less than originally quoted; no excess materials."

"I was so impressed by the work done by Sharp Edge. Their work was excellent, they were respectful of me and my home, they were quick, and their price was fair and reasonable. The work they did was neat, and they put everything back when they were. They cleaned up after the work was done. I am very pleased with them!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Staining or sealing a cedar deck or fence is highly recommended to extend its lifespan and protect it from the elements. While cedar is naturally resistant to mold and mildew, it is not impervious to damage from moisture, sun exposure, splintering, fading, and rot over time. Applying a protective finish creates a shield that preserves the wood's strength and appearance, potentially extending its life by five to 10 years.

When choosing a finish, it's helpful to understand the difference between a sealer and a stain. A sealer sits on top of the wood, whereas a combination stain and sealer soaks into the top layer. Because it penetrates the wood, a stain generally offers better protection against UV damage and rot and lasts significantly longer. For the best results that also preserve the wood's natural color, consider using a near-translucent stain.

To maintain protection, plan on reapplying the stain or sealer every two to three years, either as a DIY project or by hiring a professional.

Choosing the best color for your home exterior should factor in longevity as well as your personal taste. To keep your house looking newly painted as long as possible, stay away from red paint. Although red homes pop and are quintessential for country-style barns, red paint tends to fade fastest in the sun. Go with earth tones if you want paint that best resists fading.

The opposite is actually true: Wood stains tend to appear lighter when they’re fully dry. However, stains may darken as they weather and oxidize with age. Stains might also darken on surfaces left in direct sunlight, as UV rays can break down pigment particles and cause them to darken over time.

For homes in areas with extreme weather, high heat, or intense sun exposure, high-quality acrylic paint is the best option. Acrylic paint is durable, resistant to both heat and cold, and provides a protective barrier with excellent UV resistance. For best results, look for acrylics that contain natural earth pigments, which are better suited for resisting sun damage. While oil-based paint is also durable, it can be prone to fading in high heat and can become too viscous to apply easily in cold temperatures. Additionally, choosing a neutral or light color like gray, beige, or white can help, as these colors absorb less heat than darker shades.

Choosing whether your deck should be lighter or darker than your house is a matter of personal preference, as there is no right or wrong answer. However, considering the pros and cons of each can help guide your decision. Darker colors are often chosen because they show less dirt, footprints, and marks from daily wear, making them easier to keep clean. On the other hand, lighter deck colors tend to stay cooler in the summer. From a design perspective, using a deck color that contrasts with your home's exterior can help make the deck a more defined and distinct feature. Consulting color theory can also make the process of choosing a complementary house and deck color combination easier.
