"Angel and his crew stained my cedar fence June 2024. The job looked great a year later except for the gate for some reason. I called Angel and he came back and stained the gate again at no charge. It looks fantastic. I highly recommend this company for fence staining because they stand behind their work and do a good job. They also communicate very well with updates as to their arrival to do a job."

Small jobs welcome

"Ten Home provided quality repairs, over the top service, excellent response time and accurate cost estimate. The owner kept us updated as to what was done each day and what to expect next. Once the repairs were completed, Ten Home did more than we expected with the deck cleaning and staining. Our deck looks new again and will be good to go for many years. This was so much more cost effective than replacing the deck with composite material and it looks beautiful. I am already looking to Ten Home for my next house project as they do most any type of house repairs. I highly recommend Ten Home."

"Excellent. Anthony's team was timely, professional and provided a very high quality product. The existing stain was 9 years old and considerable repair of loose and cracked boards was needed especially on the south elevation. Preemo completed a complete color change and addressed all the siding issues without additional carpentry costs. Lots of compliments and inquiries from neighbors."

"Mike Felten of ProTect Painters and his crew did an absolutely amazing job of painting my townhouse in the time promised and at a most reasonable price. They did everything right the first time, so that nothing required patching up or repainting. They provided me with the level of customer service people expected 50 years ago and usually received—a level of service that today is about as rare as the dinosaur. I would recommend ProTect Painters to anyone. Thanks, Mike!"

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

A five-gallon bucket of deck stain will cover roughly 875 square feet in a single coat. Actual coverage will vary based on the type of wood you’re staining and the number of coats. If you plan on doing multiple coats, multiply the square footage by the number of coats to calculate how many buckets of stain you’ll need.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.

Whether to paint or stain a deck depends on your personal preference for appearance and budget. Stain provides a natural look with a range of undertones, is typically less expensive, and may only require one coat, but it does not last as long as paint. Paint offers a sleeker finish with a virtually unlimited color palette. Both options will protect your deck from outdoor elements like rain, snow, and general wear and tear.

Wood stains last anywhere from two to five years, depending on exposure to the elements, your local climate, the type of stain, and the surface it’s on. For instance, vertical surfaces last longer than horizontal surfaces. Some types of woods, like dense hardwoods, will require a recoat yearly, as they are too dense for the stain to absorb. In any event, apply a recoat every 2 to 4 years. As for storage, a can of unopened stain can last up to 5 years, though results may vary.
