First Response Drain Service is a locally owned and operated company that was developed to provide businesses and homeowners with professional service that keeps their drainage systems flowing efficiently. We have 5 employees on staff full time and 3-4 part-time employees. All are well groomed and respectful. On occasion subcontractors are used for large scale projects. This allows for proper safety and insurance requirements as we work in conjunction with other top notch contractors. First response Drain Service is owned and operated by a Union trained plumber who spent numerous years learning the trade. This valuable training is applied to our day to day operations and is what sets us apart from other sewer service contractors. We offer free estimates, charge NO travel time and bill by the hour and affordable rates. Anyone who mentions our Angie's List ad will receive a free video sewer inspection recorded to DVD. Here are some signs of a bad well pump that a pro should look at: 

  • If your well pump isn’t pumping water, you could have a leak or malfunctioning pump on your hands. 

  • If your water pump runs nonstop, there might be a leak or problem with the pressure tank, which can cause the pump to fail. 

  • Low water pressure can happen because of your pressure tank, low-water levels, or a wrong-sized pump. 

  • Dirt or sediment in your water can be a problem with a powerful pump, damaged pump filter, or the pump’s location.

Most submersible well pumps last eight to 15 years, depending on the quality, type, and how well they’re maintained. Lower-quality submersible pumps that are poorly maintained will not last very long, but higher-quality pumps can last 15 to 25 years (or even longer). Jet pumps last eight to 10 years.

When testing the pressure of your well tank, the psi should be two below the cut-on pressure. For example, if your tank is set to 40/60, then your pressure should be at 38 psi.

The precharged pressure tank should start at around 28 psi. The two pressure settings of note are the cut-in and cut-out pressure. The well pump starts when the tank reaches the minimum cut-in pressure. It turns off when the tank reaches the maximum cut-out pressure. The desired water pressure in the household is usually a few psi above the cut-in number. The difference between the cut-in and cut-out pressure settings should be 20 psi. Typical settings for household applications include 20/40, 30/50, and 40/60.

Age is certainly a factor in well pump failure. The older your pump, the more likely it is to fail. 

Beyond age, other factors can cause your well pump to fail, too. Things like poor water quality can cause sediment buildup in your pump. Without proper cleaning, your pump can seize up and fail. Having a dry well for too long can also cause your pump to fail, as it keeps working even though there's no water for it to pull.
