"Porterhouse Heating and Cooling was very professional and knowledgeable on the service provided. I used them to install my air conditioner unit. Eventhough, the unit was not my issue, they still came out and was able to find the issue and fix it. They were friendly, professional, and reasonably priced. I will definitely use again for any of my HVAC concerns."

"Highly recommend. Found this company last year on Angie's List and this is the second time using them. I was in a pinch as the A/C went out and we have a little baby. I called and they got someone out the same day. Jeff was great...knowledgeable, friendly and answered a lot of questions! Got the unit working again! These are my go-to HVAC guys!"

"Francisco of United Heating and Air Conditioning is the greatest, and I will hire him again happily and hope to have him service my system yearly going forward. He came today as promised and found that my thermostat only needed batteries, but my system was otherwise fine. He is very good and extremely honest and informative."

"Jim also replaced an aging furnace. I can't say enough good things about his operation -- prompt to respond, thorough in explaining (down to JPEGs) of problems that need attention, dependable service, good pricing. He recently fixed an HVAC thermostat problem in my condo that had most likely been caused by my tenant's well intended intervention -- with no charge. I would highly recommend him to anyone. Honest, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to work with."

"AWE promptly responded to my work request and kept me informed about my appointment status. Peter came to perform the work. He was very thorough and even discovered that the HVAC contractor on our new home installed 2 furnaces: a current year model as well as a prior year model that was more prone to breakdowns. Provided great information and would definitely hire again. Thanks!"

"I talked with the rep on the phone about the vents and my 2 A/C units. We agreed on a price based on the fact the 2nd AC only covers the master bedroom. The tech called a hour before he was to arrive. He was very professional and got right to work. He was able to clean the vents, clean out the dry vent and santize in just under 2 hours. They are very reliable and do a good job. I would definitely hire them again. They dryer is definitely drying much better!"

Heating and Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Yes, it's normal for air conditioners to leak tiny amounts of water due to condensation. Under normal circumstances, all excess moisture travels to the drain pan to be pumped through your system's drain line. You should call a technician to diagnose the issue if you're noticing frequent leaking or pooling. It's also important to investigate if your homeowners insurance can cover water damage.

When deciding whether to repair or replace your air conditioner, several factors should be considered. It is generally worth repairing the unit if it's less than 10 years old, the warranty is still active, and you're dealing with a one-off issue. Most central AC units last about 15 years, while window units last 8 to 10 years. If your unit is approaching or has surpassed the 10-year mark and requires frequent or costly repairs (e.g., over $5,000), replacement is often the more sensible long-term investment. For older, inefficient, or out-of-warranty units experiencing multiple problems, replacing it is typically the better choice.

Yes, technicians check refrigerant levels, loop performance, and system calibration for peak efficiency.

Window ACs use 500 to 1,400 watts per hour of electricity, while mini-splits use 500 to 700 watts per hour. However, if you need to cool multiple zones in your house, your mini-split can use as much as 2,000 watts per hour. How often you run your system will impact how much electricity you use (and how much you pay per month).

It is possible to add air conditioning to an older home, but it can be very expensive to do so. Expect to pay anywhere from $6,000 to $17,000 or more for the ductwork and AC unit. You’ll also have to hack into the home’s walls and ceilings to add ductwork, which can impact the aesthetics of an old home.
