"Scheduling, design and installation all handled in a pleasant and professional manner. The end results look great, and the price reasonable. We had a shelving unit installed in our linen closet, shelving added to our basement stairwell and a slat wall on the other side for hanging things on."

"Working with Chicagoland Home Products for my closets has been an excellent experience. We initially did four shelving projects with them a few years ago. They did such an excellent job and the closets and pantry have held up beautifully, so it was a no-brainer to have them complete my primary bedroom walk-in closet this month. Tammy is a pro and probably the nicest person you’ll ever meet! She remembered exactly who I was, even after a few years, and pulled up the previous design for my primary closet. We tweaked a few things to ensure I was happy and booked the install. The installers showed up on time, wore shoe covers without me asking, were very friendly, and completed my closet perfectly. I love it! I plan on working with Chicagoland Home Products in the future and recommend them to everyone."

"I reached out to Closet Furnishings to help me design and build organizational structures for our garage. We had several garden tools, stroller accessories, and random household items with no place to store them. Luckily, Jeff was thorough and thoughtful when planning out our space. He took pictures of the space and our items, measured carefully and walked me through the process. I received floor plans and budget from him straight away. I can’t say enough about our installer, Bobby. He was very kind and patient with us; he stayed late so that we could make some adjustments in real time and never showed an ounce of annoyance (which would have been justifiable). Overall, I was very happy with Closet Furnishings work ethic and deliverables. The garage looks fantastic and I can finally see the floor again! Thanks Jeff and Bobby!!"

"Words to describe Biango....flexible, collaborative, reasonable, partner. We met with a few different contractors to refinish our basement. Nick provided an estimate that was comparable to the others, but was the most flexible from the beginning. If we wanted to add something, the price obviously went up, but he also passed along any savings when he could. We knew what we wanted and Nick and I worked together to make it even better than what we envisioned. Every project has an obstacle and he was able to communicate those early and come up with even better ideas that we originally had. He also takes pride in quality work. He hand picks all the materials and fixes any issues if they occur. When I needed to make a design decision, he also spent time with me to talk through options. I highly recommend Biango Construction to all my friends!"

"Lettie is a master organizer who has brought her intuitive sense of divine space and order into our closets, kitchen and pantry and storage space, as well as overseeing our cross country house pack up. Everything she initially applied has stayed with us and as we extend into our most recent garage shelving project, we find ourselves asking, â what would Lettie do?â"

"I felt confident that they would do a good job. I was not on-site and left them alone in my condo to install the crown molding. They did keep in contact with me via text with questions and pictures. They were true professionals! They did an excellent job!!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

If you have a bathroom closet with movable shelves, you can place them at virtually any spacing that works for you. Useful measurements between shelves in the working, or middle, section can be 10 to 16 inches for towels or linens. Lower or higher shelving could be up to 24 inches between shelves to store lesser-used or bulky items or boxes.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

Plywood offers excellent stability and strength for drawer construction. Baltic birch plywood provides a premium appearance, while standard hardwood plywood offers good value. Solid wood works well but requires more attention to grain direction and seasonal movement.

The time it takes to build a closet varies widely depending on the project's size, complexity, and level of customization. On average, construction can take anywhere from a few days to two weeks.

A simple reach-in closet might be completed in less than a day, while a more complex walk-in closet could take one to two days or more. A typical project often falls in the 2-to-5-day range. However, a large, highly customized walk-in closet that requires structural changes, like moving a load-bearing wall, will take significantly longer.

A professional contractor can provide the most accurate time estimate for your specific project. If you are planning a DIY build, it is best to budget additional time.
