"My loft above my garage was humid and a bit uncomfortable from what I was expecting. I’ve watched enough home repair shows and understand air flow enough to know it would never be perfect, but something was off because of the humidity issues. Mike came in and did an inspection, confirming that there was a lot of room for improvement in the garage ceiling. The heat camera was showing that there was a lot of heat transfer happening in the loft, foot prints (from boots) leaving heat transfer marks which is unusual and recommended dense insulation pack to fill the void. I sat on it for a few weeks, called and scheduled for the 17th, but got in early due to an opening. It took several hours to complete the work, and the folks said it had 5” bat insulation but a 17” void, which confirmed Mike’s original thought that there was a gap between the insulation and the loft floor which was carrying the heat from the outside into the floor."

R-value is a measurement that dictates how much resistance an insulation material has against heat flow—or how well it can stop heat from coming and going. A higher R-value, which is attributed to thicker and more dense materials, means the better the insulation performs. There is not one universal recommended value. It depends on climate zones. For example, Alaska, which has a naturally cold and arctic climate, has higher R-value recommendations than the hot and humid Hawaii.

There is no blanket figure for a residential home’s electrical load, since load varies by the size of the home, how many appliances are used, and the efficiency of their electrical systems. Typically, however, it’s safe to assume 40 to 60 amps is the average electrical load of a residential home. 

While many states require all new construction to undergo blower door tests, it’s not a requirement for existing homes. But in both cases, a blower test helps confirm that the contractor has sealed the exterior, that the type of ductwork installed is functioning properly, and that your home is as efficient as possible.

Homeowners may qualify for an HVAC tax credit if they install an ENERGY STAR®-certified HVAC system that exceeds the energy efficiency minimum standards:

  • Split-System AC: 16 SEER2

  • Packaged AC: 15.2 SEER2 and 11.5 EER2

  • Ducted Split Heat Pump: 15.2 SEER2, 7.8 HSPF2, and 11.7 EER2 

  • Packaged Heat Pump: 15.2 SEER2, 7.2 HSPF2, and 10.6 EER2

  • Mini-Split System: 16 SEER2, 9 HSPF2, and 12 EER2

You can claim up to 30% of the cost of the job, subject to maximums.
