"They did a very nice job with our deck and exterior wood trim - everything looks great, including the wood repair and replacement. The crew were all professional and courteous, and did a thorough job, not rushing through anything just to get it done. Bottom line - we will be hiring HPO painting again to do some interior wall paper removal and painting for us."

"MQ Painting was very professional in every aspect of the work they completed for us. They power washed every surface prior to painting. All surfaces were sanded or scraped as needed. Two coats of stain we applied to all surfaces. The garage doors were stripped, stained and varnished. The deck railings were completely replaced and painted on a very large deck. Originally, Jose thought only a portion of the railing spindles needed to be replaced. As the job proceeded it was apparent that all spindles and railing wood needed to be replaced. The only additional charge was for the materials, not for labor even though every spindle needed to be individually cut from larger pieces of lumber. MQ was the only painting contractor who bid on our paint job who was willing to do all the woodwork repairs needed on the deck. Other contractors said we'd need to have someone repair the deck and then they would paint it. We appreciated working with just one contractor. Their painting and carpentry work was top notch. All workers were neat, punctual and conscientious. All materials and tools were picked up and stored at the end of every work day. I discovered MQ Painting through Angie's List. I highly recommend MQ Painting and would absolutely hire them again."

"Absolutely wonderful! Anthony and his workers arrived on time and left the premises clean with everything picked up each day. They repaired loose siding and patched holes along with nailing where needed. They were delightful to work with and we highly recommend them to anyone needing painting/staining."

"We messaged them late Monday evening and they were able to come out within a couple of hours to give us a quote. The cleaning was very thorough. We were very impressed with how well they did even with us having a husky that sheds a lot. They worked well with our dogs in the house. We felt comfortable leaving them in the house alone. They were very responsive and took notes on what we wanted done. We are putting our house on the market and after the deep clean feel it is market ready. We plan to use them again if we need maintenance cleans while our house is on the market."

Customers say: Quality work

"Donald, the Deck Doctor, cleaned and re-stained our deck and re-sealed our brick patio with polymeric sand. He was reasonably responsive and gave us a very competitive quote. So far, we're very happy with the end results and would highly recommend Deck Doctor. Note that Donald is basically a one man crew and he hires addictional help as needed."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Your tool of choice ultimately comes down to personal preference. Many DIYers prefer applying stain with a lint-free rag, but others stick with a paint brush or a roller. Wipe the stain and work it into the wood, working with and against the grain. If you’re applying multiple coats, allow the stain to dry for around four hours between coats.

Liquid rubber is great for waterproofing, but it can damage your deck if it’s not applied correctly. First, it can trap moisture in the wood if the deck isn’t completely dry before application.  Second, applying it too thickly can create a heavy, rubbery surface layer that peels and cracks under fluctuating temperatures. For the best results, ensure the wood is completely dry before application, and apply the liquid rubber in thin, even coats. A quick inspection every now and then will help you catch any issues early, keeping your deck protected and looking its best.

Applying a sealer or topcoat after staining wood is highly recommended, though not always strictly required. A sealer protects the wood from moisture, UV rays, and weather-related issues, which is especially important for outdoor surfaces like decks and fences. It also enhances the stain's durability, prevents fading over time, and gives the wood a cleaner, more professional-looking finish. For some indoor applications, a sealer may not be necessary, depending on the type of stain used and the level of protection needed. It's always best to check the stain manufacturer's recommendations and consider the wood's intended use and exposure when deciding whether to apply a sealer.

An exterior paint job typically lasts between 5 and 10 years, though this can range from 3 to 17 years depending on several factors. The longevity is influenced by the quality of the paint and primer, the quality of the application, the local climate, and the type of surface being painted. For example, paint on wood siding may need to be redone every 3 to 7 years, while painted brick can last up to 17 years. Aluminum siding often needs repainting every 5 years.

Staining pressure-treated wood is a recommended practice. While inherently resilient, it's not impervious to moisture and UV exposure. Staining treated wood is feasible and recommended for enhanced protection and longevity. Applying stain and sealant safeguards against degradation, prolonging its life span. These measures shield the wood from environmental threats while augmenting its aesthetic appeal, ensuring your investment endures the test of time.
