"Pivotal was contacted about porch pillar shifting. Jeff was exceptionally prompt and communicative. He drove out to look at the site...which was a 30 min. drive. He called the day of the appt. and said he might be a little late...(very thoughtful). After looking at it, he suggested a simpler and less expensive solution. I didn't think there were contractors like this around anymore. I would not hesitate to hire him....he's pretty rare."

"Called company on Monday and got an appointment for an inspection on Wednesday. That following Monday, the technician arrived and went through each step is sealing off the concrete foundation to the water leak. The fix worked well and was put to the test with the recent record rains. Not one drop of water came into the basement."

"I was going to have my wood burning fireplace converted to gas so they did a chimney inspection and discoverd extensive damage from birds nesting in chimney. They provided an immediate clean up estimate and I hired them to do that work to protect against further damage . They recommended that a gas fireplace was not a safe option so we talked through options for an electric insert. I decided to wait on that but was very impressed with customer service and quality of work."

"Thrasher did a great job. The foreman was knowledgeable and he explained what was going to be done. We were allowed to watch the process. They leveled the front step and the sidewalk by drilling holes in the concrete and pumping foam under them until everything was level. They caulked everything when they were done and cleaned up the area. The entrance to our home looks so much better. It was well worth the money."

"He was extremely professional, knowledgeable, and honest. After the visual inspection, he said we didn't need further testing which saved us a lot of money. He provided a thorough explanation for all of my questions and concerns. He also checked all the areas I was concerned with which included some cutting and removing of quarter round. This was a free estimate. Based on his integrity and knowledge, I would definitely hire him in the future."

Masonry questions, answered by experts

Older homes in Eureka frequently feature lime-based mortar or rubble stone foundations. Mixing modern cement with historic materials causes severe brick damage, so you must identify the original composition before starting masonry work. Additionally, expansive clay soils in the region create seasonal shifting that repeatedly cracks structures. Finally, steeply pitched roofs require special scaffolding, complicating chimney access. Always evaluate these foundational and structural elements before beginning your project.

Helpful?

When evaluating masonry work, watch for recurring cracks in the same location, which indicate ongoing soil movement beneath your foundation. White mineral deposits or flaking brick faces signal active water infiltration that rapidly worsens during IL freeze-thaw cycles. Address mortar joint erosion exceeding a quarter-inch immediately to prevent bricks from shifting. Leaning chimneys, bulging walls, or interior water stains require prompt professional evaluation to prevent structural failure.

Helpful?

Your home is a great candidate for masonry work if it features original brick, stone chimneys, or concrete block foundations that remain structurally stable. In IL, repeated freezing and thawing heavily impacts older mortar. If your mortar joints show erosion of a quarter-inch or more, prioritize tuckpointing before water causes deeper damage. Ensure your property has proper drainage sloping away from the foundation to protect any restorative improvements.

Helpful?

Schedule exterior masonry work between May and October to ensure the best curing conditions. Before starting, contact the Eureka building department to confirm permit requirements for structural repairs. If you own an older home, test the existing mortar to match its hardness and prevent future damage. Always factor in the region's frost dates and arrange necessary scaffolding access for upper-story or chimney repairs.

Helpful?

After finishing masonry work, allow adequate curing time before exposing the surface to freezing temperatures or rain. Local professionals recommend a visual inspection the following spring to confirm the mortar bonded correctly through the harsh Eureka winter. Inspect your gutters and downspouts to ensure they direct water away from the repaired walls. Finally, verify that any required building permits are officially closed out to avoid future property complications.
