No, you can’t drain your sump pump into your home’s sewer system. In fact, it’s against the law in many places because dumping extra water into a municipal water system can disrupt or overwhelm the treatment process. And for similar reasons, you shouldn’t discharge a sump pump into your septic system, either.

To avoid a major drainage pipe issue, it’s best to inspect your pipes a few times a year for signs of wear and tear. Some telltale signs that you need to replace your drainage pipes include:

If you notice water coming out of the bottom of your tank or the flush handle, you obviously have a leaking tank. Water on the side of the tank can indicate cracks.
