Excavating, skid loader work, driveways, sidewalks, patios,, and pads, gravel, asphalt(blacktop), concrete, fencing, and land clearing. I have been in business for 30 years and now my dad has finally retired, so I have extra help and need to keep him busy. I love what I do and have low overhead, so I can keep my prices extremely competitive.

"We have hired Jack Ames twice now. Two years ago he removed and then completely redid our driveway. We liked his work and great pricing so we called him again to add on. They go a step above all the time. The first time he did a last minute removal of old concete and poured a step to our patio that was not on his list. This time, he even went back and filled in dirt where the concrete would have had a huge drop off to the grass. This will save us a ton of back breaking work. His prices even beat out blacktop estimates that we received. We highly recommend Ames Concrete."

New Leaf Remodeling is a professional construction firm with two civil engineers and a design consultant on staff and more than 70 years combined design and construction experience. We give a warranty on all work and labor and offer a design studio to plan your projects. Our fully insured personnel are friendly and respectful, treating your home with the care it deserves.

"Would HIGHLY NOT RECOMMEND. Requests to discuss significant concerns regarding our project went ignored and were only acknowledged after we filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau & IL Atty General due to some of their practices. Be aware of your rights and would strongly advise you to document all encounters and request all details be finalized in written documentation no matter how small it may seem at the time. Lastly, know your rights to request a Sworn Statement (A document that lists the contractors and suppliers that provide material or labor to a construction project. It includes information about who is owed money, how much they are owed, and the remaining balance on their contract.) Consider a contractor that will not turn an ear to hearing difficult concerns and will, instead, choose to address things head on in a professional manner versus have to fight to be heard."

Driveway Sealcoating questions, answered by experts

A properly applied sealcoat should last between two to five years, but we advise having your driveway resealed every two to three years to give it optimal protection. If you live somewhere with extreme weather, plan to reseal your driveway every two years—heavy rainfall and freezing temperatures can deteriorate the sealant quickly.

If you don’t want to seal the entire driveway using a squeegee, you can use a roller instead. Rolling the driveway sealer also provides an even, sufficient coating, although it might require more skills to control the speed and pressure. We don’t recommend spraying the driveway sealer because it would cause more splash, hence wasting more material. If anything, you may spray the sealant and go over the surface again with a squeegee to ensure proper coating.

Yes, it’s possible to seal your driveway too much. Whether you have an asphalt or concrete driveway, sealing it every year opens your driveway to potential damage. Sealing an asphalt driveway annually may cause the seal to crack and peel even more. It may even trap oils within the asphalt that can leave you driving on a soft driveway. Avoid sealing your concrete driveway too much to prevent the concrete from cracking. If water enters these cracks, it can freeze, expand, and cause the cracks to worsen.

An asphalt driveway costs between $3,150 and $7,400, depending on the size of the driveway and the depth of the asphalt. Expect to pay between $2 and $6 per square foot for materials and $5 to $7 per square foot for labor. Although installing asphalt yourself will save you on labor costs, it might ultimately cost you more when you make a mistake.

Maintaining a driveway depends on the material your driveway is made of. Concrete and asphalt should be sealed to protect against water and freeze-thaw cycles. Cracks and expansion joints should be filled with a flexible polyurethane caulk or asphalt sealer. Before you apply a sealant to your driveway, consider pressure washing the surface. It will take off any loose sealant and any grime that might have caused a stain. Sealing over dirt and stains will trap it under the sealer.

If you live in colder climates, consider using sand rather than salt to de-ice. Sand helps melt the snow and ice without speeding up the freezing and unthawing process of your driveway, which helps prevent cracks from forming from the constant fluctuation of temperatures.
