"Excellent job installing a new water heater and carrying away the old one. The job was done well and timely. They were also available to advise me on other little plumbing issues that I had. Overall, I was pleased with what they did."

"Everything went pretty good. One weird situation happened when they had opened up the wall behind the shower surround. It had some old insulation that had gotten wet. We knew going in that there would be some water damage, since the old surround had cracked. They didn't plan on replacing the insulation, even though it was soaking wet! When I asked about it, I was told to go buy new insulation and they would install it the next day. At the same time,  there was some slight mold on the wall studs. I asked about the mold. I was told to get a bucket of bleach water and scrub down the mold areas! All that being said, Joe did go out of his way to help me with a problem in a different part of my house. Everyone was polite and easy to talk to and answered all my questions. They went above and beyond when venting the new exhaust fan. There was a nest of wasps in the gable vent of my house. Cutting the hole for the vent stiffed them up quite a bit, but Tony and Joe braved the wasps and got the job done!

"The yearly service works out to be $50 a month. We've had two water heaters replaced through them because of a fault in them. They're usually very responsive. I like that I can request the service online. The only thing is, I wish that there was a better avenue for emergency services. If something doesn't work right away usually it takes a couple of days to get someone out and sometimes you can't wait two days without water."

Water Heaters FAQs, answered by experts

A larger heater requires a larger breaker—unless there’s one already installed. The longer answer to this question is more nuanced. Do you place demands on the heater at the same time as running other heavy-duty appliances like ovens and washing machines? Do you live in an older home that may not have considered the higher electrical demands we have now? Breakers need to be sized at 125% of the load. To find that load, you should call a local electrical pro.

Yes, you can replace a current tank water heater with a tankless model or vice versa. If you’re maintaining the same fuel source—gas or electricity—the switchover should be smooth. A conventional tank requires open floor space, while a tankless model can be wall-mounted. If you’re switching to a tank water heater, you might need to clear space for it. Gas-powered tankless water heaters need a large volume of gas when they start running to heat the water instantly. You might need to increase the size of the gas line when going from a tank to a tankless model.

If you're replacing a broken water heater, now is a great time to make sure you're selecting a unit that has the right capacity for your household. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a small 50-gallon to 60-gallon tank is sufficient for households with one to three people. A medium-sized 80-gallon tank is considered ideal for three to four people. A larger tank may be needed if your household has four to six people.

The average cost to replace a water heater is around $1,325, with a typical range of $900 to $1,800 for a standard replacement. The final price depends on the type of heater (tank vs. tankless), its size, fuel source (gas or electric), and the complexity of the installation. A simple one-to-one replacement will be on the lower end of the cost spectrum. However, if you are switching from one type of heater or energy source to another, you can expect labor costs to be significantly higher due to the extra work involved. It's also worth considering that while gas and electric heaters may have similar upfront costs, their long-term operating costs can differ based on local utility prices.

The average lifespan of a water heater is eight to 12 years. If your water heater is approaching its first decade of life and is giving you problems, talk to a plumber about your replacement options.

Keep in mind that certain parts of a water heater, such as the anode rod, may need replacement long before the heater itself. An anode rod often has a lifespan of three to five years.
