"Absolutely amazing I only rated B on price bc this stuff is expensive anywhere you go.. but I will say as we're nearing the end of my project I feel like I got a massive bargain.. my home is very old & this extremely polite respectful crew went above & beyond to make sure everything was done right. Clapboard siding is traditionally made of wood, and is one of the most common types of wood siding in North America. When people talk about wood siding, they are usually talking about clapboard siding. However, not all wood siding is in the clapboard style: It can be tongue-and-groove, shake, and other designs. Also, clapboard siding can sometimes be made of different materials, like vinyl or fiber cement, so the terms are not interchangeable.

Traditionally, you place a layer of ⅜-inch foam board beneath aluminum siding. This gives you a smooth surface to which you can fasten the trim and siding. Beneath the foam board, you should have some kind of waterproof sheathing to further protect your home from water damage. It’s possible this sheathing is already under your current siding.

The lifespan of siding ranges from 20 to over 100 years, depending heavily on the material, climate, quality of installation, and maintenance.

  • Vinyl, Wood, and Aluminum: Typically last 20 to 40 years. Engineered wood may need replacement after just 20 years.

  • Fiber Cement: Lasts around 50 years.

  • Brick and Stone: These are the most durable, lasting for a century or more with proper care.

The longevity of any siding can be shortened if it's not properly maintained or if damage is not repaired promptly. Regular cleaning is vital. It's time for a replacement when you see widespread damage, signs of water intrusion, or a spike in energy costs.

Mildew grows into porous wood, making it more difficult to remove than regular dirt (and more destructive). We suggest using a dedicated mildew and mold fungicide to remove mildew, which is found in any local home improvement store. Apply a dose of the fungicide to the siding and leave to work according to the instructions, usually for an hour or two. Then wash it thoroughly away and scrub the spot again. Repeat the process if necessary. If nothing is removing the mildew stains, you should plan on removing those clapboard planks in time, as their damage could cause future problems.
