"The rep came out as promised, and gave us a quote on the spot- about $1000. He filled in the three woodpecker holes, and removed my messy attempts to eradicate the bird. He then added several "toys" to keep the bird away- an owl face with metallic streamers, and four little bicycle reflectors to confuse it. Finally, he set up a speaker that broadcasts timed recordings of bird distress calls and predator bird calls. He came back a week later and painted the repairs, using paint we gave him. Final report- we have not seen the woodpecker since. Nice job!"

"After making a few phone calls to other Angie?s List pest control contractors, I selected E & M based solely upon availability.  I needed someone to investigate the animal noises my mother was hearing in her attic as soon as possible, and Mr. Bohlen was available.  When he arrived at her place, he was friendly, knowledgeable, and very respectful.  Upon his initial visit, he explained that he would set one (1) trap, and if that did not take care of the problem, he would in turn set two (2) traps.  He also explained that he could not set the traps on his initial visit because he did not have his ladder to perform an investigation; however, we established that he would return on the next day that was convenient to us.  At this point, I mentioned to Mr. Bohlen that I wanted it to be a live animal capture and release.

When Mr. Bohlen returned, he set one (1) trap and told us that he would return in a few days to see if the trap worked.  A few days later, the trap was empty, turned on its side, and the food that was used as bait was gone.  Mr. Bohlen then set two (2) traps at opposing ends of the attic; he suggested as an alternative, that he lay down rat poison at which point I begged him not to kill ?Rocky?.  For the traps to be more effective, I provided some Planter?s mixed nuts as enticement for the live capture.  Upon placement of the traps, Mr. Bohlen could see where the squirrels were entering the attic.  He took pictures of the entry-point with his iPhone and showed the pictures to me, but mentioned that he did not know how to use the e-mail function on his new phone in order to e-mail the photos to me.  Upon his departure, Mr. Bohlen offered a temporary solution of mesh to keep the squirrels out, but with his description of their entry-point, we believed that a roofer was needed to replace the pest-control screen around the attic vent as a permanent solution.  Mr. Bohlen offered to give me the phone number of a roofer that he knew as soon as he spoke with the gentleman directly, and then he explained that he would return in a few days to check the traps.

Those ?few days? turned into a full week.  Mr. Bohlen set the traps on Saturday and anticipated on returning on Tuesday.  He had to reschedule for Thursday; then tentatively rescheduled for Saturday.  At one point, I called him to ask him if he was still going to come to the house as he had promised.  He told me that he had to remain at home while he waited for a furniture delivery (or something like that).  In any case, by the time he arrived at my mother?s house, I was not feeling very charitable toward Mr. Bohlen, especially after I had removed the clothes from my mother?s closet numerous times in order for him to gain access to the attic?s trap door, only for him not to show.  To make matters worse, when Mr. Bohlen removed the traps, one (1) squirrel had perished.  He was apologetic and thanked me for my patience, but a bad taste was already in my mouth.

In short, I never received an e-mail from Mr. Bohlen of the photo that I could use in order to get an estimate from a roofer; I never received a phone number of the roofer that Mr. Bohlen knew; and despite my desire to have live capture of the squirrels in the attic, one (1) died because Mr. Bohlen failed to check on the traps in a timely fashion.  And yes, my mother STILL has a squirrel problem, which I have decided that I will take care of personally.

I believe the rave reviews about E & M Pest Management, however, I think that Mr. Bohlen dropped the ball during this particular service call."

"I called Groen's on a Tuesday morning because we were hearing scratching noises in our attic. We thought perhaps a squirrel had gotten into the attic. My boss had recommended his service as he had a raccoon in his attic a few months earlier. Josh Groen called me back within an hour of my leaving a mesage. I described the noises we were hearing and his first thought was that we had mice in the attic. We set up an appointment for that Friday since I couldn't be home any earlier, though he could have accommodated an earlier day for the appointment.
Josh called me at 8:30am Friday morning to let me know that he was on his way and expected to arrive on time for my 9:00am appointment. He arrived exactly at 9:00am. He donned little booties and we went upstairs to where the attic door was located. He opened the door, located in our bedroom closet, and pointed out right away that there were 'tunnels' in the blown-in insulation and that was an indicator for mice. He went into the attic itself and found more tunnels. He also noticed that the protective screen from one of our roof vents was missing and there was now a large bird nest filling that whole area. He said he could remove the nest and put a new protective screen up so that nothing could get into the attic from that area. After he removed the nest and put the secured a new screen, he said he was going to put some poison mice cubes into the attic. He said that I could buy them myself from a garden store or Home Depot, if I wanted, but that his were more powerful. It was my choice and I told him to go ahead and take care of it.
I asked him to check the crawlspace as well and he looked down there and threw some of the cubes in the crawlspace. We saw some signs that the mice had been in the basement living area as well but he said he wouldn't put any cubes in the living area because we had a dog, even though I said she never came downstairs, he was against doing it and I agreed.
I had mentioned that I was afraid that mice were getting into our kitchen because there was a fairly large hole under the kitchen sink cabinet where the pipes come up from the basement. He looked and said that was a good possibility. He suggested that we find a way to cover up that area. Then he said he might have some material in his truck that would work. He brought back a sheet of metal, cut to a proper size, and screwed it into place. He noticed a small hole in the cabinet wall that was by the dishwasher and used the small remaining piece to cover that hole up too.
He spent about an hour and a half in total checking things out and answering every question I had for him. He was really nice and friendly and never seemed like he was in a hurry to get to the next appointment. When I asked how long he thought it would take for me to notice whether the mice were 'gone' he said give it 5-7 days. I haven't heard one noise since Josh came to the house. I would recommend Josh to family, friends, even strangers. His prices were really reasonable as well, even before using the coupon.

Bird Control questions, answered by experts

Small amounts of geese are actually good for the environment. They help spread seeds and lead to more plant growth, but they’re often an invasive species, particularly Canadian geese. This means a small gaggle can quickly grow into a level that litters your lawn with bald patches and excrement.

The cost of pest control services depends on various factors, but the average homeowner pays around $175, with a typical range of $100 to $500. Your final cost will be influenced by the type of pest, the size and severity of the infestation, and the number of treatments needed.

Service costs also vary by frequency:

  • One-time service: $300–$550

  • Initial visit for ongoing service: $150–$300

  • Monthly visits: $40–$70

  • Quarterly visits: $100–$300

  • Annual visits: $300–$550

For specific pest examples, getting rid of spiders typically costs between $100 and $300, whereas a termite infestation can cost from $230 to $2,500 or more, depending on the extent of the damage.

You can find a variety of humane bird repellent sprays online and at home improvement stores. However, if you want to try a DIY method that will keep birds away without harming them, mix some water, dish soap, and a few drops of peppermint oil and spray the area you want bird-free. Peppermint oil is a notoriously lovely smell for humans, but birds tend to avoid it.

Woodpeckers may seek out homes with aluminum siding or tin roofs because these surfaces echo their drumming. Homes with wood siding are more frequently targeted as roosting areas or for food sources. If you have insects living in the exposed wood in your home, the birds are likely looking for a snack, in which case your best option is to hire an exterminator.

No, you shouldn’t have to worry about bats in your yard as long as they don’t make their way inside your house. Typically, bats hang around backyards in order to consume bugs, especially if they’re located in the U.S. Bats that are native to North America can consume more than 500 bugs per hour, so they may actually benefit your yard if mosquitoes are prevalent.
