"We first hired Kris to refinish our double hardwood front doorsâ ¦ they were 22 years old and severely neglected and he refinished them by hand. They look brand new! During this process we learned he also built custom cabinetsâ ¦ so we have since hired Kris for 2 cabinetry projects (he re-did our massive family room entertainment unit and built new floating shelves for the top half; he also built a brand new custom linen closet with shelves for our bathroom). We really admire Krisâ strong work ethic, timely responsiveness, attention to detail, and going above and beyond to ensure projects are done well. We will definitely be calling on Kris again for additional projects in the future!"

"Excellent job! We hired the company for few projects- custom walk-in closets, cabinets and laundry. The precision and attention to detail was exceptional. It was very nice to work with and they listened to every request we made. We were very pleased with the overall experience and will hire them again. Strongly recommend."

Customers say: True professional

"I had interviewed one other paint company before interviewing Brian, the owner of Mull Painting and Decorating. Brain was able to provide me with decorating tips and other considerations I had not thought of, such as painting my cabinets. My moderate project went to a huge project BUT the results are amazing. I would hire them again in a second. Tom and Tammy were my painters and they acted like a member of the family. I cannot possibly convey how wonderful it was to have them for 2 weeks, painting, joking, and just down right being awesome. In the middle of a complete paint job - walls, ceilings, closets, cabinets, moldings, doors and door hardware replacement, I was totally calm. Brian was at my house almost every day checking on the progress. This group is beyond comparison."

Small jobs welcome

"Adrian re-did my sons bathroom after we found a leak. He took the time to explain what the job would consist of and how much it would cost. I have him replace the tub, install tile in the shower and floor and paint. He did a spectacular job and my kids love their bathroom. Adrian was on time and answered all of my questions or concerns. Even when my kids would go say hi, he took the time to say hi back. Will definitely recommend him to my neighbors and friends."

"Jimmy, Ken & Jason we're hired to paint my ceilings and 2 story foyer. They did a fantastic job. Looks beautiful. Everything was spotless when they left. They even put a light fixture in my ceiling and painted a extra wall for me. Just to be nice. Wasn't charged. My husband came home & asked if I brought the garbage cans in. I said no, must have been one of the guys. Like who does things like this??? They do!!!! I can't thank them enough. Great Guys. I will recommend & use them again.... Thank you Jimmy"

FAQs for closet service projects in Cary, IL

Building a custom closet costs about $2,000, on average. Because many types, sizes, and designs are available, the cost to build custom closets ranges from $250 to $6,000 or more. A reach-in closet is on the lower end of the price range from about $250 to $1,500, compared to a walk-in closet at $750 to $3,500 or a wardrobe at the high end between $1,500 and $6,000 or more.

The main difference between a closet and a wardrobe is that a closet is a separate room for general storage with its own door, and a wardrobe can be either built-in or freestanding place to store clothing. A walk-in or reach-in closet connected to a bedroom often serves the same purpose as a wardrobe by primarily storing clothes and shoes. A built-in wardrobe often does not have doors and leaves clothes exposed to view, whereas a standalone wardrobe usually has doors.

You may need a building permit to add a closet, depending on the size and kind of work required to install it. The most likely scenario requiring a permit involves changing the structure of the house and performing electrical work for closet lighting. A permit can cost between $100 and $450. If you’re installing a smaller reach-in closet, a permit may not be required, but always check with your local municipality and consult a closet designer or builder.

Different types of closets are defined mostly by size. A few different types of closets include:

  • A reach-in closet is a smaller closet that you can stand in front of and reach everything inside it. Aside from the size, the doors and the level of drywall finish are typically the largest price factors.

  • A walk-in closet can be anything from a small 5-by-5 feet closet that has a narrow walkway with shelves on both sides to a 100 square foot bedroom-sized closet with shelving along the walls and plenty of room to move around in.

  • A built-in wardrobe often does not have a door and leaves the clothes and other contents open to the room, whereas a closet usually has a door to separate it from the rest of the room.

Yes, building a custom closet can definitely add value to your home. Creating a more useful and pleasing space to your home, especially a custom closet for prospective home buyers to imagine as their own, is likely to increase the value. However, avoid overdoing it with a closet that takes up too much space that’s otherwise more useful as living space, or paying extra for overly lavish materials and finishes that aren’t likely to add more value than they cost.
