"We had a sunroom addition put on our house several years ago and the vinyl siding on the side of the house adjacent to the low-E glass was wrinkling and distorting from the heat of the direct and reflected summer sun. At first it was just cosmetic, but this year it progressed to the point where the siding had pulled out of the J-channel at the roof line and we had leaks in heavy rain. We needed to have all the siding replaced on that side of the house. We had several siding companies look at it and even the larger ones were concerned about working near the glass and had no workable solution to the heat problem. Vince Deluca was the only one who had a solution to the heat, suggesting heat resistant vinyl siding made for this application. He also stopped by several times to evaluate how to work safely around the glass. The work went extremely well and the results look superb. We definitely will ask Mr. DeLucca back should we ever need further siding work done. Mr. and Mrs. W. Fritsch"

"It went extremely well. I got an excellent estimate and they came in under that. The workers were professional, thoughtful of the property, and at the end, you would not have known they were there. My property was immaculate. I would hire them again in a heartbeat."

Siding questions, answered by experts

The best siding to cover brick is vinyl or metal siding. Vinyl is low maintenance and affordable, while metal is highly durable and offers some of the best insulation on top of brick. Fiber cement is another great option. Though you can install wood siding on top of brick, it’s not as ideal.

While almost nothing is completely fireproof, metal siding is extremely fire-resistant. It’s non-combustible so while it may eventually melt in extreme temperatures, it won’t actually light on fire itself. This can add a layer of safety to structures that wood or vinyl siding can’t, making it attractive for industrial use. Metal siding can significantly slow down the spread of a fire, giving extinguishers and firefighters a much better chance at saving the structure and containing the blaze.

Hail as small as 3/4 inch (about the size of a penny) can cause damage to your siding. When hail reaches 1 inch in size, you can expect to see more cracks, chips, and holes, and hail that’s 1 and 1/4 to 1 and 1/2 inches around will cause significant damage. If you see hail that’s 1 and 1/2 inches to 2 inches or more in size, the damage is likely to be extensive and possibly even dangerous.

Although horizontal siding is found on more homes and deemed more popular, vertical siding is gaining popularity and becoming more trendy. Its ability to make homes appear taller and modern design is making it a favorite among homeowners. Plus, the vast style options available make it suitable for various architecture types.

Siding is one of your home’s first lines of defense against extreme weather. If you fail to repair or replace your damaged siding, your home is exposed to wind, snow, and rain—all of which can cause structural damage. Repairing your home’s structure will be much more costly and be a much bigger headache than simply keeping your siding in tip-top shape, so don’t delay—fix your siding ASAP.
