"The home genius team was very helpful. They put my roof on a while ago and I had a leak recently that they came and inspected. We determined that my box gutters needed fixed and I had them do the job. Walter the project manager was very helpful coordinating the work and the work lance did an amazing job repairing the box gutters."

"Excellent…..Excellent……Excellent. We have used Apex on four different jobs in the last five months. After they replaced three bay windows, we tried them on realigning two heavy sliding windows that would not shut properly because the house had sunk over the last 100 years. We had to stuff insulation into the one inch cracks each winter to keep the cold out. Then we fixed two windows with seals broken so that they fogged up. Lastly some wooden framing had rotted out in two windows over the years; they were repaired as good as new. The price quotes were fair; the work was done on schedule; and my wife and I are delighted that our home windows now sparkle."

"First off, everyone we've dealt with has been professional, friendly, and courteous. We liked the reviews we saw in Angie's List and Murphy's installed a new sliding door for us in Nov 2014. One of our requests was it be "lightweight" and easy to slide. Well, it didn't seem that way when it was installed, but we were told to give it some time to loosen up. Nope. Still heavy and hard to open and close... 3+ years later. Next problem was the screen door with it. In Spring 2015 (when we needed it, since the door was installed in the winter), the screen door continuously came off its track. Don came out to fix it ("right") and it almost lasted until the end of the season. I spoke with Jimmy Murphy who runs the place... again, super nice and super friendly... but when I reached him to help... lots of delays, promises, etc. I kept putting it back on the track myself for short-term fixes. I called/texted in the Fall 2017 to have it fixed or replaced... no response. Called/Texted again in Spring 2018 and was told someone would be out to take care of it. No one. Another call and text promising to be there "next Tuesday." Nothin. I've had enough. Well meaning group, but lacks follow-through and, apparently, the ability to keep customers happy/satisfied. Hard to imagine that 20 minutes of their time and/or possibly $10-50 in parts will cost them my future business and possibly the loss of others' business (after reading this). Won't use again...."

"First, this 1 room ?den? took from beginning of July through February to complete.  We were referred from a good friend that had a grade A experience, ours was not that positive. Overall, the room turned out lovely, but the experience was annoying and frustrating to say the least.  Just a heads up, the website says $95/hour, but it is easier for Nick to round to $100/hour and not get around to changing the website.

We were designing a third bedroom/den to have a pull out couch and custom built-ins for additional storage. After meeting with Nick taking the dimensions of the room, Nick came back with intriguing designs and fabrics on paper. (almost 2 months later, but this was just the beginning). Once we approved the design, Nick brought the contractor into the picture and both came over to discuss all the designs of the room and took additional measurements and turn specific designs into reality in our tiny space. It all went down hill from here.

Nick sent us the custom built ins pictures from the contractors warehouse and saw many errors and changes to the original design and concept. Nick never caught the errors and thought it looked awesome. Not sure where all the miscommunication came from but things were built incorrectly or not built at all. Nick did not stand by his design and we were stuck with incorrect furniture as well as contractors having to rebuild furniture. The contractors did fix as many errors as they could to satisfy us, but Nick never advocated for us and stepped out of the picture a lot and made us deal with them directly, even though he was the designer and referral source.  Nick charged us hourly for going to the warehouse and discussing measurements and design for multiple hours but still with multiple mistakes. Not sure what they ever discussed since it was WRONG.  Examples, file drawers turned into open cubbies, decorative legs turned into square stubs, 3 cabinets tuned into 6 cabinets, TV stand was supposed to be a triangle corner unit turned into a larger rectangle piece. Nicks designs were not followed but Nick approved the final product and never discussed with us.

The main issue is that Nick has poor follow through with his designs, terrible communication skills with follow up and follow through. He is unprofessional and does not stand by his own work or advocate for his clients. He blames others for mistakes and it is never his fault.

He designed a window shade for us and all we paid for was labor. He had left over fabric of his own that he gave to us for free. When the shade arrived and installed it was too short. We confronted Nick about it and his response was ?that is what you get for a budget?.

The billing was a mess. After collecting his $750 deposit, it took him 5 months to give us a bill and ?make up? his hours for what it went toward. We paid him for time, but still had no room or products to show for it. Watch out for the billing. He bills 20 min meetings and calls it an hour. He bills meeting with contractors, but no idea what he discusses for multiple hours since the project was incorrect.

When it came down to design, I was the one that picked out all the fabric on my own, picked out my own couch and purchased my own couch, while he billed for time to look up couch options, when he ended up using my own choice and fabric anyway.

On a positive note, the room turned out functional and aesthetically pleasing. But to actually work with him on a professional level and have the design turn out correctly it was a true headache and gave us unnecessary stress."

"Greg came out and looked at the problem and promptly followed up with an estimate that had been lower than other providers we had contacted.  I let him know right away that we wanted to move forward and his team got started the next morning.  The GMS team did an amazing job repairing our drywall issues.  Would definitely recommend them in the future.

Window Shutter Repair questions, answered by experts

Plantation shutters cost an average of $2,990, making them one of the pricier shutter options. However, they offer a 75% return on your investment and are great options for boosting curb appeal and property value. Most people go for plantation shutters for their timeless, vintage look. They also provide the strongest light blocking and temperature control for your home.

Shutters are still very common in Southern, farmhouse, and traditional-style homes, especially those in warm climates who can benefit from the increased efficiency. While modern homes and designs tend to shy away from shutters, shutters are a timeless design style that will likely be around for decades to come.

The most popular estate shutter brands include Hunter Douglas, Budget Blinds®, and Graber®. Hunter Douglas shutters cost $20 to $26 per square foot and include high-quality hardwood and faux wood options. Budget Blinds shutters cost $20 to $24 per square foot, depending on if you choose natural wood or another material. Depending on the material, Graber shutters range from $18 to $24 per square foot.

Not all windows are suitable for shutters, as certain styles can prevent them from functioning correctly. It's best to avoid installing shutters on bay windows, picture windows, dormer windows, and double-mulled windows. Shutters are better suited for large, full-size standard windows or French doors.

Additionally, consider the room's lighting needs. Since shutters effectively block light, they are an excellent choice for rooms where you want more darkness and privacy, such as a master bedroom or a main living room. For window types that are not ideal for functional shutters, some homeowners choose to install fixed (non-functional) shutters to maintain a consistent look across the home.

Estate shutters offer more energy efficiency, privacy, and light control than blinds. They provide better insulation against heat and cold, lowering your energy bills. They’re also sturdy, durable, and last much longer than blinds (up to 50 years or longer). They’re also low-maintenance and can add curb appeal to your home. The return on investment (ROI) for estate shutters is around 75%.
