"When I met with the two salespeople from Universal Windows Direct of Boise (NOW Remodeling), I settled with this company because of the high-end, insulated siding they offered me. I also requested octagon gable vents. When the materials arrived to my home, the siding was not insulated. I called the production manager and he told me my contract listed the lower-end siding. Unfortunately, I did sign the contract trusting what was discussed was listed. I had not realize the siding name on the contract was the lower-end siding. The company did work with me to resolve the issue by giving me the insulation and gable vents at no added cost. I feel the salespeople, the production manager and the subcontractor installer need to talk with one another. The company also needs to add a follow up call to the costumer to verify what was requested prior to ordering the material. The customer is not familiar with the names of the siding or terms used and what should be listed on the contract. I thought it was odd that the installer asked me for the color that I selected because that was not ever written on the contract."

Siding questions, answered by experts

You can put new siding over clapboards, but it’s not recommended. Some sidings, like vinyl siding, can go over clapboards with sheathing like a foam layer in between. However, it’s best to remove clapboard siding if you plan on replacing it with new siding. Burying wood clapboards underneath new siding can create risks of rot and mold, or hidden insect damage. It can also create warping issues over time. Removing clapboards allows you to properly install a new sheathing, as well as clean up the exterior wall and look for any signs of damage.

If you have stucco on the outside of your home, it’s technically considered cladding and not siding, but beyond that, it’s impossible to tell without a little digging. Without damaging the siding material, expose part of it to see if there’s an air gap between the siding and your exterior wall. If there is, you have cladding. If the siding is affixed directly to the exterior wall, you have a simple siding system.

Look and feel for signs of damage after a hail storm. On vinyl siding, there will likely be cracks or holes. If you have steel or aluminum siding, look for dents and cracked or chipped paint. For wood and fiber cement boards, dents are the most common sign of hail damage.

Signs that you need to replace your siding include siding that’s warping, bubbling, or cracking; signs of rot or mold growth; fading, peeling, or chipped siding or paint; or siding that’s separating from the exterior of your house. Failing to replace your siding when it’s damaged can lead to moisture problems or structural damage, so promptly repair or replace siding as soon as you notice any of these signs.

On it own, aluminum siding has a relatively low insulation value (also called R-value); aluminum siding has an R-value of 0.61. However, you can purchase insulated aluminum siding to increase the R-value to between 2 and 5. You can also install additional insulation within your walls to help maintain temperatures within your home. On average, insulation costs $1,825 to install throughout the typical home.
