Small jobs welcome

"Andrew at AEH Construction was amazing to work with. My husband suffered a major medical event while we were in the midst of a DIY remodel. Someone else did a little work, but Andrew was able to come in, fix the errors from the first contractor, and finish up our project. Andrew was very reliable and had a great work ethic. We had some real head scratchers to solve, especially when it came to fixing what the previous contractor did. But Andrew took the time to work through everything to make sure it was right. Andrew did a little of everything around our home. He installed stacked stone on our fireplace; installed floor and door trim; painted trim, interior doors, and cabinet doors; partially removed and repaired a poorly installed kitchen backsplash; installed backsplash in two bathrooms and a laundry room; completely gutted and retiled our primary shower; installed LVP flooring in kitchen, dining, and two bathrooms; did quite a bit of interior painting; insulated and drywalled the garage walls and ceiling; installed a new bathroom vanity; did plumbing work in two bathrooms; and Iâ m sure there is more that Iâ m forgetting. I donâ t think thereâ s anything possible left to be done to our house, but if we came up with something, I wouldnâ t hesitate to hire Andrew again."

Drywall questions, answered by experts

A common cause of separation between a wall and the ceiling is truss lift—this can happen to the ceiling of rooms directly under the attic when the seasons change and wood building materials dry out, shrink, and shift. Roof trusses often dry out at different speeds, and if the bottom pieces dry out faster than the top pieces, they can shrink and pull the attached drywall away from ceilings and walls, causing cracks. Fortunately, truss lift is only a cosmetic problem, not a structural problem, and you can fix it by separating the ceiling drywall from the roof trusses, and patching the cracks.

You can drywall an unheated garage because the material handles cold temperatures perfectly well. There are no risks or downsides to installing drywall in a garage that is not heated, and the material stands up to moisture and other elements quite well. Drywall will protect your unheated garage's electric wires and cables and add fire protection. However, for effective bonding, you should install drywall at a temperature of 55 degrees Fahrenheit or higher.

You’ll want to inspect your plaster walls for signs of damage before painting. If you notice soft spots, deep cracks, bubbling, or areas where the plaster is crumbling or pulling away from the wall, it likely needs repair. While small hairline cracks are common and likely cosmetic, you should address larger issues before painting to ensure a quality, smooth finish.

Both plaster and drywall are durable wall finishes, but they differ significantly in installation, cost, performance, and aesthetics.

Installation & Cost: Drywall installation is faster and more affordable, typically costing $1.50 to $3 per square foot. It uses premade sheets, making it a more accessible DIY project. Plastering is a labor-intensive craft that requires specialized skills, pushing costs to $2 to $10 per square foot. It involves applying a wet paste over a lath framework.

Durability & Performance: Plaster is generally more durable, longer-lasting, and provides superior soundproofing. It is also a better insulator, which can help reduce energy costs. Drywall is easier to remove for future renovations.

Aesthetics: Drywall provides a smooth, uniform surface ready for paint or texture. Plaster offers a high-end, naturally textured look that can hide imperfections and is often preferred for achieving a classic or historic aesthetic.

Which is better? The choice depends on your priorities. Drywall is ideal for those prioritizing a lower upfront cost, faster installation, and DIY potential. Plaster is the better option for a higher-end project where durability, soundproofing, and a unique, premium finish are more important than the initial cost.

If you only have tiny holes in your drywall (for example, dents or nail marks), you probably won’t need a patch kit. Instead, you can plug the hole with a small amount of spackle. Once the spackle dries, you can sand the area and paint over it—just like you would in the steps outlined above.
