"It went great! We had tried to do this project for 2-3 years and could not get return calls or estimates from the contractors we called. Nick retuned calls, got estimates done quickly and got the work scheduled fast! Aaron came and took care of the cottonwood trunks. Aaron and Nick accomplished the digging, grading, dry well and culvert in about two days. Thank you. And the starting point was much more rugged than those pictures FYI."

"They got the job done promptly. Of all the companies that gave me estimates the owner was the most thorough and explaining a variety of options fencing. They always came on the days and times they said they would and the fence looks great!"

"Kyle and Gus from Summit were great to work with. They cleared approx. 1/4 acre of trees and brush, leveled my build area with dirt available elsewhere on my property, contoured and compacted the remaining area in preparation for fabric and rock. We worked together on this project over 6 weeks, a few days at a time. Communication was good, pricing reasonable and great guys to work with."

"Outstanding arborist and excavator! Compared to other tree companies, Cody saved me thousands. He took down only the hazard trees that really needed to go and opened up my waterfront view without butchering trees or destabilizing my bank. With the money I saved I got extra clearing and grubbing that I wanted to do for years. On time, within budget and quality work. What more can you ask for?"

"Super professional and efficient! Extremely great communication and Will was incredibly nice. He showed up on time and even helped us load everything up. We had a ton of stuff that needed removed while we cleaned up our property and remodeled our home. He was in and out in one day! Very affordable and worth every dollar."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

In most areas, you will need a permit for excavation work, even for projects that only involve grading or yard leveling. Permit requirements depend on your local government and the scope of the project, but they are especially common for significant digging or work that could affect utilities or public property. These permits help protect the local topography and prevent drainage issues. An experienced excavation company will typically know whether permits are needed and can often handle the process of pulling and closing them for you. You can also verify permit requirements by contacting your local building department and describing your project.

The best method for digging a trench depends on the scope of the project. For a short, shallow trench (less than 2 feet deep) in light, soft soil, digging by hand may be sufficient. However, digging by hand is labor-intensive, so consider the effort required. A machine trencher is the better option for longer trenches (over 100 feet), deeper ones, or when dealing with difficult soil conditions, such as rocky or hard ground, or obstructions like tree roots. A machine can save significant time and energy in these situations.

Trenches are typically 12 to 24 inches deep and 8 inches wide. However, the required depth depends on the specific project and local ordinances. For example, a French drain may need to be 18 inches deep, while a water pipe might require a depth of 24 inches and a drainage pipe 36 inches. Your city or county may have specific regulations, so it's wise to consult with an excavation professional to determine the correct depth for your project.

The rules and regulations regarding groundwater use vary between states. To find out if you can dig a well on your property, you’ll have to consult these regulations, address any compliance requirements, and get the appropriate permits. It’s also important to check that your intended location has the right geology and water table to support a well.

A trench that is less than 5 feet deep often doesn't require a protective system. Most residential trenches will not go this deep (the typical residential drainage trench is just 18 inches deep). In the event that an excavator needs to dig more than 5 feet beneath the surface, a protective system is required unless the excavation is in entirely stable rock.
