"We have Frontpoint at two houses. We had been looking for ways to cut our monthly expenses (Frontpoint is approx. $100 per month total), so I called them to find out what I could do. They informed me that I was under contract for another year, and that I cannot get out of the contract without an early termination fee that is equal to the cost of the service. I'm a little disappointed, because the upfront cost of the system was very expensive ($1,000+) for each house, so it seems odd that I would get sucked into this contract. Nevertheless, I forgot that I signed up for this with them. My calendar is marked for the day that my service ends, and I will be switching to a company that charges about half of what they do. They have OK customer service and are very responsive, but the wireless system had some issues with reception in my house due to a fireplace, and then they didn't want to work with me to get that resolved. They're OK, but I can't really recommend them."

"Our 20+ year old roof had been patched several times but serious leakage around the brick fireplace, sagging roof areas and minor occasional leaks in other areas prompted us to have the entire roof replaced.
Obtained estimates from three very qualified companies and pricing was comparable across all three. One adjustment I made in comparing them was the number of sheets of plywood that would need to be replaced. Having been on the roof with Tim, we agreed that there would need to be more sheets replaced than the 3 shown on Tim's standard estimate but we would not be able to determine how many until the old shingles came off. I factored in many additional sheets at the per-sheet price to make the number of sheets to be replaced consistent across all three companies. Tim's estimate came in somewhat under the others.
Throughout the estimating, scheduling, construction and follow-up process, Tim was always easy to get in touch with and kept me apprised of what was happening. He has a thorough knowledge of up-to-date roofing technologies and processes. One of the reasons I chose his company was his recommendations on the best approach for what needed to be done. His willingness and patience in answering my probably never-ending list of questions was another reason.
His crew is professional and hard-working. When rain interrupted work, the stripped areas of roof were tarped. The crew worked until dark to make up for lost time on a one-day job that turned into a two-day job for circumstances out of their control.
Tim and his crew did a great job of accomplishing what we needed. Des Moines Area Roofing did a great job for us.

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Electric fireplaces give off more heat than you might think. Because they don’t lose heat through a ventilation system, which is required for wood-burning and gas fireplaces, they’re able to disperse more heat into the room. However, many electric fireplaces are limited to a max of 5,000 or 5,200 BTU heat output, and you can get more from traditional fireplaces.

Chimney caps are necessary both from a building safety standpoint in most municipalities and to keep your home protected from a variety of issues. Chimney caps are not only mandated by building code in most areas, but they also serve to keep squirrels, raccoons, and other pests out of your home, as well as snow and rain. Therefore, they help to avoid property damage, making them a worthwhile investment.

Most cleanings take 1-3 hours, but extensive soot buildup or liner damage may require additional time.

Running a gas fireplace costs approximately $0.35 per hour for natural gas and $0.62 per hour for propane, though these figures can vary significantly based on fuel prices in your area. On average, the annual cost to run a gas fireplace is between $400 and $640. The exact impact on your utility bill depends on several factors, including how often you use it, the size of the room you're heating, and the fireplace's BTU rating. Some models with a constantly running pilot light will consume a minimal amount of energy even when off, although many modern fireplaces do not require one. If you are looking for a more energy-efficient option, consider an electric fireplace.

Pellet stoves are much more energy efficient than traditional fireplaces, and the pellets they burn create fewer emissions, leaving indoor and outdoor air cleaner. Plus, the biomass pellets are made from recycled materials, making them even more eco-friendly. You can also adjust the temperature of a pellet stove and go about most of your day without needing to tend to it.
