The roof pitch on a Cape Cod house is normally 8/12 or 10/12, meaning the roof rises 8 to 10 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. This is steeper than the now-standard 6/12 pitch, as Cape Cod homes were originally popular in northern states, where the steeper pitch helped snowfall slide readily off the roof.

There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.

You can replace a roof in the winter, though it’s not the most popular time to do so. The biggest drawback of winter roofing work is the weather. Snow and ice make for dangerous, slippery working conditions. Plus, shingles can only be installed in temperatures above 40 to 45 degrees. 

The best time to replace a roof is in the spring or fall when the weather is mild. However, you can likely save some money by booking the job in the winter off-season, when roofers have more availability. 

While you can technically install TPO roofing over an existing roof, it isn't always wise to do so. The more layers of material you add to your roof, the more weight it must support. You may also develop moisture issues by covering your existing roof with TPO. Your local building codes and regulations may actually require you to remove the existing roof before adding TPO, so check with your local municipality.
