"Initially had them come out because our AC stopped in the dead of summer. Was so impressed by the honesty and non sale approach. My tech was there to genuinely fix my issue, did not mention an upsell once. Will not use any other HVAC company"

"When the technician arrived, he was very disheveled. His shirt was not tucked in, it was full of holes and he did not introduce himself. I took him down to the basement so he could look at the furnace as we have a heat pump. We just moved into this house 2 weeks ago so I had questions. When I asked him if there was a different filter as the one we have is somewhat tricky to install, he answered me but the said in a joking way that I gave him a look like I didn't know what the f**k he was talking about. I was surprised by his lack of professionalism. He finished whst he needed to do then went outside to the a/c unit. Once done, he just came back in through the front door without knocking. Any other technician we've had in our home always knocked first. He explained everything he did and then I paid the invoice. He was knowledgeable but his appearance was sloppy and he was unprofessional. He did not represent Fred's well and if this had been my first interaction with Fred's, it would have probably been my last. We do not want this technician back in our home but we will hire Fred's again."

Air Conditioning questions, answered by experts

Most units are designed only to cool the house down to 20 degrees less than the temperature outside. This means that if it’s 99 degrees Fahrenheit out and you’re trying to cool your home down to 65 degrees, you’ll notice your AC is struggling.

Lower the blinds on all your windows, turn on your ceiling fans, and keep the thermostat at a consistent temperature to help your AC do its job. Investing in an HVAC maintenance plan also helps because pros will come out to inspect and tune up your unit regularly, keeping it in optimal working condition.

A power outage can damage your air conditioner, just like a power surge can damage any electrical device or appliance. In most cases, your circuit breaker or built-in surge protection on your AC unit protects your AC and just needs a reset. But in other cases, it might be that your AC compressor or capacitor was blown during the power surge. You’ll need to have an HVAC professional repair or replace any AC parts.

Common signs of insufficient return air include uneven temperatures, with some parts of your home feeling hotter or colder than others, and noticeable differences in air pressure between rooms. You might also observe that more air is blowing in rooms closer to the AC unit. Leaky air ducts can also be a related issue or clue.

To keep your air conditioner in good working condition, you should have it serviced by a professional at least once per year, ideally in the spring before the cooling season begins. If your AC unit is 10 years or older, consider servicing it twice a year (once in the spring and once in the fall) to catch potential problems early and help it reach its full lifespan. During a service visit, a technician will inspect, clean, and replace parts as needed. Regular maintenance helps avoid costly repairs. As a DIY task, you can also clean the evaporator coils annually.

Yesh, heat pumps can easily cool homes when the weather reaches over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, just as powerful air conditioners can. The key is sizing the heat pump correctly for the size of your home and your climate. A local heat  pump professional can help you determine the right size and type for your home.
