Benjamin Franklin Plumbing is a family owned and operated plumbing company servicing Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Davenport, and Waterloo- and all areas in between. We offer 24 hour emergency service and your phone call will always be answered by a live person. Each of our technicians is background checked and drug tested to insure that we are sending safe individuals into your home. When they arrive, they will always be dressed in a clean uniform with a tucked-in shirt and will put shoe covers on over their boots before coming into your home. They are also sure to clean up any messes that may be created during a repair. Our technicians will arrive in a full stocked truck when they come to your home for a repair. This allows them to complete almost any job without having to "run out to get parts". It also gives them the benefit of being able to look each concern over, give you all of your options, and give you straight forward pricing for each option- all before they begin their work. This is to help you make an informed decision on how you would like them to proceed. We always try to the best of our ability to work with your schedule when booking an appointment, and in most areas we offer extended business hours during the week and do have appointments available on the weekends (including Sundays). Call today to schedule your plumbing repair, and mention you saw us on Angie's List to receive a $25 repair discount.

"Had a leak under my sink so I called Benjamin Franklin Plumbing. They came out and spent 45 minutes start to finish (including diagnosis), took out one metal pipe and replaced it with PVC. They charged me $329.03 for 45 minutes of labor and a few PVC pipes. Then sat in my driveway for the next 40 minutes on their phones until about 5:30pm. The work done was fine, but the prices for the time spent and materials is extreme. Will not be calling Benjamin Franklin Plumbing for any future needs."

"This is a Great company! I tried to fix the faucet myself and ran into a bit of a snag. They were at my house in 15 minutes! The serviceman was very professional, had the parts needed in his truck, fixed the problem, and best of all the price was Very reasonable. I would highly recommend them."

Water Softeners questions, answered by experts

Selecting the right system depends on testing your water to understand the contaminants present and considering your household's water usage and specific needs, such as removing specific contaminants.

Most experts agree there’s not much difference health-wise between hard water versus soft water. That said, hard water is more likely to cause skin dryness and issues that go along with it, like an itchy or flaky scalp. Hard water can also decrease the life span of your household appliances and make it more difficult for soap to do its job.

The most accurate way to determine whether you have hard water is to purchase a water test kit from a hardware store or send a tap water sample to a lab. But there are some signs you can look out for without professional testing. For instance, if you're consistently dealing with mineral stains on your glassware, windows, and shower doors, you're likely to have hard water. Hard water can also make it harder to lather and rinse soap, so if you're struggling to work up a good lather in the shower, hard water might be the culprit.

Drinking hard water is not known to have any negative health impacts. Using hard water can lead to dry skin and hair, and the minerals in hard water can build up in pipes, faucets, and appliances. Hard water is more of a threat to your plumbing than it is to your health.

You can decide whether you need a water softener or water filter based on how your bathing or laundry experience is. If you notice issues like limescale buildup, dry skin, or stains on dishes—all telltale signs of hard water—you'd likely benefit from a water softener. However, if your main concern is over chemicals or bacteria in your tap water filter, and not just comfort, a filter is a better option.
