"From my consultant Latoya, to the installers, Douglas and Johnny, this was a great experience! They were all very professional. Latoya was patient while I was trying to make a decision on the new carpet. Douglas and Johnny were on time and came in and got the job done quickly. They removed the old carpet, put down new padding and carpet. The new carpet feels so good under my barefeet! I would use Empire again, and would recommend them for your flooring needs,"

Tile: Ceramic and Porcelain - Install

"Victor did an amazing job. Absolutely beautiful. He tore out the previous horrible job and saved me. Straight forward reasonable pricing. Master tile setter. Great technique. My late father did tile all his life; he would be proud. I cannot say enough about his amazing tile work. No nonsense, smooth, perfectly grouted. Quick and on time. Ready to go and stays busy. Everything about the job is just right. The large kitchen floor is rock solid, the shower tile is offset perfectly, the edges are finished, the drainage is good, the inset is beautiful. I want more house to tile."

"Two of the best guys showed up and did the best job! They told me when they would begin and end and that’s exactly what they did. They protected everything and no mess afterwards. I definitely recommend Chilel for tiling. Thank you Angi. It was hard to find someone to replace my fireplace tile and install a new mantle."

Ceramic Tile questions, answered by experts

The easiest tile size to install is large tiles, and they’re easier to install than small tiles—the job is faster and simpler when there’s less placing, adhering, and grouting to do. However, when tiles get really big, they’re more difficult to handle, cut, and fit. Standard floor tile sizes are 12-by-12 inches, 18-by-18 inches, and 12-by-24 inches.

Natural stone floors, especially pebble-style tiling, are one of the least slippery options for a shower floor. Natural stone has a texture to reduce slickness, and pebble-shaped tiles add more visual and textural contrast while reducing slippage. Vinyl tiles are also designed with anti-slip texture for added safety. If you have a slippery tile, be sure to add a grippy shower mat to reduce the risk of falls.

The average cost for tile installation is about $2,000, with a typical price range between $500 and $6,500. On a per-square-foot basis, you can expect to pay between $5 and $45 for installation.

Several factors influence the total cost, including:

  • Installation Site: Costs vary for different areas. Common project costs are: kitchen floor ($870–$6,100), countertop or backsplash ($500–$3,000), bathroom floor ($300–$2,400), or shower wall ($225–$2,000).

  • Tile Type and Quality: The material significantly impacts price. For example, standard ceramic or travertine tile can cost about $1 per square foot, while luxury options like marble can be as much as $350 per square foot for the material alone.

  • Project Size and Complexity: The total square footage, the complexity of the pattern, and the shape of the tile (e.g., square, rectangle, hexagon, mosaic) will affect labor and material costs.

  • Site Preparation: The amount of prep work needed, such as removing old tile or installing a new subfloor or backer board, can add to the final price.

  • Tile Characteristics: The tile's durability rating and porosity can also influence the price.

  • Location: Labor rates vary by geographic location.

You can, in theory, tile your fireplace hearth with most tiles. However just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. For example, it’s much better to use unglazed tiles because glazed tiles are more resistant to cracking under extreme heat. Porcelain is more heat-resistant than ceramic, but you can still design the hearth as you like by putting the most heat-resistant tiles directly under the fire and, if it matches your style, add more decorative tiles further from the center of the fire.

When tiling over concrete, you should install an anti-fracture membrane after the concrete has been prepared. The anti-fracture membrane acts as a moisture barrier and should be installed to protect the tiles from moisture which helps maintain their integrity. Often, Ditra, a brand name, is used interchangeably with moisture barrier.
