"The fire department recommended that we call an electrician when we experienced an odd burning smell in the house. I called Mr. Electric of Douglasville and talked to Lamont who was polite, professional, and patiently provided details on the inspection process. He was upfront with the pricing and scheduled an appointment for us the same day. When his senior technician could not come out, he came instead. The inspection did not find an electrical issues but because Lamont was extremely thorough, he noticed that there was a stronger than normal smell of gas in the attic and recommended we call a heating/air company to check it out. We did, and we found out that there was a small gas leak (!) coming from the pipe that leads to the furnace! If Lamont had not been so conscientious, we may not have known until it was too late. Not to mention, the fire department had just inspected the attic a few hours before but they did not notice or speak of any smell of gas. SO, THANK YOU LAMONT!"

Customers say: Super punctual

"Great experience with BriteBox Electrical Services. Cory Henderson was professional, respectful, and easy to communicate with from start to finish. I showed him where I wanted the outlet installed, and he handled everything with precision. He took the time to protect the work area, safely shut down the circuit, and completed a clean, high-quality installation. The workmanship was excellent. I’ll definitely be requesting Cory again for future projects. Highly recommend!"

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Yes, electricians must be licensed, certified, and in most cases, insured. Licensing requirements vary by state and local municipality, but most U.S. municipalities require electricians to hold an electrical contractor’s license. It's always a good practice to confirm requirements with your local municipality. Even if licensing is not required in your area, hiring a licensed and experienced electrician often leads to a better end result.

A license is a legal requirement to operate a business and is necessary for pulling project permits. Certifications, on the other hand, are typically voluntary and demonstrate a certain level of expertise. In some cases, a certified electrician may send an apprentice or journeyman to perform the work, but they must operate under a primary electrician who holds the proper license.

Before hiring, you should verify the electrician's license, insurance coverage, and any third-party certifications. You can use Angi’s contractor licensing search to confirm a pro's license status. Additionally, businesses with the “Angi Approved” badge on our platform meet strict criteria, including having the required state and local licenses, passing a background check, and maintaining a high average rating.

The answer depends on your needs and the availability of your current electrical panel. If you’re hoping to seriously up the power in your detached living space, you may also need to consider increasing the power of the amp your home runs on (from 100-amps to 200-amps, for example).

The best place to put an electrical outlet depends on your needs. A good rule of thumb is to install outlets every 6 feet in large rooms. Hallways over 10 feet long need one electrical outlet minimum.

If you find yourself needing extra plug-ins for all of your gadgets, you may want to increase the number of electrical outlets in your room. When adding outlets, keep in mind that older homes could have outdated electrical panels. In these cases, you may need a pro to upgrade you from 100-amp to 200-amp service before increasing the power load.

Call your utility company immediately. Do not go outside, even in your own yard, and keep pets indoors. Downed power lines pose a serious electrocution hazard. They can also cause large power surges that could damage your appliances, so it’s a good idea to shut down power to your home if possible. If your breakers trip, leave them off until the utility company finishes its repair work.

Durations range from an hour for simple jobs to full workdays for significant upgrades.
