Small jobs welcome

"Our property has a gentle sloping toward the back. After hurricane Helene and losing nine trees, the equipment removing the trees tore up the yard on the slopes. Plus, when the trees were finally removed, equipment tore up my property around that area. I hired C&A Land Improvements in Martinez to provide dirt to smooth out the torn up areas. Plus, with sloping land they provided hay bales and planted fast growing grass to protect the dirt from rain water. They also use their equipment to flatten the bulging areas where the trees had been removed. I sure appreciate their good work."

"My entire property was devastated by hurricane Helene. I lost all of my trees. I gave Terrence and Mike the overall design of what I wanted. What they accomplished exceeded my expectations. I love my property now. If I can get used to all of this sunshine!"

"Excellent work and pricing were very reasonable. Jim and his crew were awesome. They replaced my back fence, and the work was done very professionally and in a timely manner. I would most definitely recommend this company for a fence."

"My husband and I were pleased with their attitude and their work ethic. They came on the date we determined to be suitable, they went straight to work after introducing themselves and they made any corrections we suggested in a polite and agreeable manner. We are so happy to have them ! Linda Boland, on Stevens Creek in Merriwether Community, SC"

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Most states do not require excavation companies to hold specific licenses, but many require at least a contractor’s license. Additionally, heavy equipment operators require a special commercial equipment license to operate machinery required for excavation. You can use Angi’s contractor licensing tool to confirm that an excavation company you’re considering hiring is fully licensed. You should also make sure that the excavation team is fully insured before allowing them to work on your property.

If you don’t wish to dig it out and convert it into a finished basement, you can still encapsulate your crawl space to protect it from damage for an average cost of $5,500. Finishing a crawl space beyond this isn’t really worthwhile, as the low ceilings mean you won’t be able to use the area as living space.

Yes. A metal detector is one of the quickest and easiest ways to find your septic tank. However, metal detectors can be too expensive (costing upward of $300 in some cases), and not everyone has a metal detector just lying around. If that’s the case for you, you can also take a long metal rod and poke it into the ground at regular intervals until you hit something—likely your septic tank lid.

Sewer lines can be buried anywhere from 18 inches to 8 feet deep, with a common average depth between 18 and 30 inches. The exact depth depends on local factors like climate and soil type. In colder regions, pipes must be buried deeper (below the frost line) to prevent freezing, sometimes as deep as 8 feet. The digging depth can also impact the cost of sewer line replacement. To find the specific depth for your property, you can check the building plans for your system, which should be on file with your city or local sanitation department since permits are required for installation.

A trench that is less than 5 feet deep often doesn't require a protective system. Most residential trenches will not go this deep (the typical residential drainage trench is just 18 inches deep). In the event that an excavator needs to dig more than 5 feet beneath the surface, a protective system is required unless the excavation is in entirely stable rock.
