"J & R Home Solutions responded immediately after I found them on Angi. They replaced warped boards on my deck and did excellent work. I was impressed enough that I’m already planning to hire them for future landscaping. Highly recommend!"

"Our project included a lot of drain trenches, 14 pallets of sod, 138 cubic yards of mulch and 70+ bushes and trees and installing an irrigation system. We could not be happier. The entire crew did a great job. Jim Hillis is wonderful with assessing what will work in every area of the yard. We would recommend his company and give 10 stars if we could. People have stopped when we are outside and tell us how great our yard looks."

His customer service was friendly, his expertise was technically proficient in recommending what to do where on the lawn, and his eye for possibilities was inspiring. "Ideal Landscapes has been one of the most impressive companies I have ever hired. I met with about ten different companies before selecting this company. It was a pretty large project and I’m a pretty picky person, so I wanted to be sure that I was getting the best quality at a fair price. They did a FANTASTIC job! They built a pretty large double tier retaining wall in a steep slope, leveled the top part of the yard to make it usable, graded the entire backyard, brought in sod, ran irrigation, filled the beds with soil for my garden, and pinestrawed a very large area. I was impressed with their attention to detail, their professionalism, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, their communication. The owner went above and beyond to answer every question and thoroughly communicate every step of the way. He also offered several recommendations mid-project that I’m glad he brought up because they really added to the final appearance and functionality. I recommend Ideal Landscapes 100%"

Landscaping questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can hydroseed with a garden hose, but you’ll need a tank or other large vessel for mixing the slurry, then a pump to send the slurry through the hose for spraying. Making your own hydroseeding unit can work, but it’s not usually worth the effort and supplies unless you already have them.

Determining how many boulders you’ll need for your landscaping project depends on the area you need to cover and how big each boulder is. First, you’ll need to determine how big of an area you want covered, then divide that by the base surface area of the boulders. A landscape professional can help you determine how many boulders will be right for your project.

If you use the wrong plants for your gardening zone, you’ll likely get less than desirable yields from them. In some cases, your plants can even die. It’s important to ensure that your plants are able to survive in your hardiness zone before getting them into the ground.

In most cases, buying plants from a local greenhouse or nursery is well worth the investment, even though they tend to be a bit more expensive than those at a home improvement store. Employees at nurseries are usually well-versed in gardening and understand how the climate in your area affects different plants. They can help you make selections based on your skill level and time commitment to your landscaping, and they can provide detailed care instructions and advice to help keep your plants alive and diagnose and treat issues like pest infestation and illness.

Many ways to landscape a steep slope on a budget exist. Avoiding expensive retaining wall construction is the first step. Consider creating a rocky slope with boulders or large stones, or think about planting perennials that return every year with a single investment. Transplanting small trees from elsewhere on your property is also possible and can help to stabilize steep slopes without purchasing new ones.
