"Georgia Electrical Techs was efficient and respectful. Adam helped us find a creative solution to run electric into our backyard for a hot tub while also planning for future electrical needs. The staff offered to wear masks while in our home even though my partner and I weren't even in the same space as them while they were working."

"Mr. Owen came out the next day for an electrical outlet fire in our bedroom. The estimate was free and all estimates were given upfront. He checked other outlets and light switches around our home to find the source and didn't do patch work. our outlet was fixed within a couple of hours. He was courteous, did not mind getting additional supplies from the local store to get the job done. I was VERY pleased with his work and plan to use him for additional work in the future. He shared a lot of helpful information and made a bad experience much better."

"WB Lightning Rods did an excellent job installing lightening rods on our home. The owner stayed onsite the entire time to supervise the work. He took extra care to plan the rod and cable placement to ensure the proper protection and retain the aesthetics of our home. His crew were knowledgeable, polite, neat and efficient. We could not be more pleased with the results."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

An estimate for electrical work should include an estimated number and an estimated price to complete the work. An electrical estimate should also include a description of the services to be provided as well as the materials to be used, such as wiring, switches, panels, or other items, and the cost for those materials. If any tax is charged, that should appear on the estimate, too. Some estimates may include additional options that can be added to the base price of the quoted job if the customer chooses to go ahead with the add-ons.

Outlets do wear out, usually within 15-25 years, but they can fail even sooner than that —sometimes in a matter of years. If your plugs always slide out after you put them in, this is a sign your outlets need to be replaced. Additionally, if your outlets are damaged, cracked, discolored, or regularly tripping the circuit breaker, they may be at the end of their life.

Yes, pool pumps use a significant amount of electricity, making them one of the biggest energy consumers in a home. A pool pump can use up to three times as much electricity as a refrigerator. Typically, a residential pool pump consumes about 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) for every hour it runs. Because pumps often need to run for about eight hours a day to properly filter the water, this can add up to an annual consumption of 3,000 to 5,000 kWh, which can cost between $480 and $800 per year based on average electricity rates.

The amount of electricity your pump uses depends on its size, energy efficiency, and daily run time. To lower your energy consumption, you can choose an energy-efficient or variable-speed pump, ensure it is correctly sized for your pool, and run it only for the minimum time required to keep the water clean.

When converting a standard 120-volt outlet to a 240-volt outlet, the only components you can typically reuse are the existing electrical box and the hole in the wall. Everything else—including the wiring, breaker, and receptacle—should be replaced to ensure both safety and efficiency. Appliances designed for 240 volts have different plug configurations that won’t fit into a standard 120-volt outlet, making it necessary to install a compatible 240-volt receptacle. This design helps prevent overloading or underloading the power available to any one outlet or circuit.

To upgrade electrical systems in older homes, you might need to reroute new wires with lath and plaster walls. That’s because it’s more challenging to get inside the walls of an older home compared to a modern home, which usually uses drywall. But there are easier ways to level up your electrical game in an older home. For instance, you can swap out an old furnace for a new electric heat pump, or you could use a heat pump for water heating.
