"This was the Greatest Experience I have ever had with Home Improvement. I had read the reviews first and all I saw was how Great this Charlie guy was. He had so many 5 star reviews I thought he was an imaginary Guy. Then I called him. I needed Vinyl Siding and I was ready immediately. He told me that we could meet the next day. I gave him my address and I will be darn . We live around the corner from each other. We talked for a while and he told me about the difference in all of the siding. You cannot install clapboard siding on a bare, unprepared surface. Clapboard siding requires a clean, sturdy base made from plywood or similar materials, sometimes called backerboard. Then, it needs an underlayment or sheathing, a moisture membrane to help protect the exterior wall.

Note that sometimes clapboard siding is caulked as it’s installed for additional protection. We don’t suggest this: Caulking the siding can trap moisture inside the clapboards and lead to moisture damage over time. The siding needs some space to “breathe,” especially in rainy weather.

Fiber cement siding is the best siding to install over stucco because it offers many of the same benefits for homes where stucco is common, including fire resistance, insect resistance, and good insulation. Fiber cement siding is also rigid, so it won’t warp over time like vinyl siding might if installed over furring strips.

The main differences between dutch lap versus clapboard siding have to do with their design and texture. Clapboard siding features flat, beveled planks stacked at a slight angle, offering a simple, traditional look. Dutch lap siding features a subtly concave surface along with a notch that creates a shadowed look between the boards. This eye-catching design often resembles wood grain and introduces a noticeable shadow line, making it more visually interesting compared to the simpler look of clapboard siding.
