"Shaughan first came out to deal with a double light problem - and found a great way to fix both problems at very modest cost. He came back with EJ to install a celing light in a closet with built in shelves- and through his clever work habit did not leave a speck of dust or debris! Then they installed a new ceiling fan/light combination in our living room. They were very polite, clean and neatly dressed, and completed their work well within our expected time frame. The fee was the amount quoted to us ahead of time. Calvary Electric was recommended to us by neighbors and we will continue to use them and recommend them to others. Great work, Shaughan & EJ, many thanks!"

"York Electric rebuilt whole electric system-wires, outlets, switches, breakers, etc. in our house after the hurricane Ian. Their specialists are professional and affable. They gave us a quote, we discussed some options and after signing the contract, they started to work immediately. The company owner is a reliable and pleasant person."

"Great service and prices. This is the second time they have done work for us. In both cases the workers are friendly, professional, work quickly, and leave the place clean. This time they quoted ceiling fan installation over the phone, were able to do the work the same day or the next day. Two workers arrived, followed shortly by the owner, who helped and supervised. When they saw that we are Angie's List members they gave us an additional discount over their already very reasonable prices. Everyone from the person who answers the phone to the owner is great to work with. We only wish they did more than electrical work, we'd love to have them do all our projects!"

Ceiling Fans questions, answered by experts

Most ceiling fans have a lifespan of anywhere from five to 15 years or 10 years on average. Just how long your ceiling fan lasts depends on the quality of the parts, how much it’s used, and how well you maintain it. A fan with a weak motor that runs on the medium setting nonstop is likely to have a shorter lifespan compared to a fan with a powerful motor that runs on the slowest setting for air circulation.

The number of blades for your fan poses both advantages and disadvantages. Typically, the more blades on a fan, the better the air distribution and cooling effect, but this also means that your fan will have more wear on its motor. For small rooms, three-blade fans should work fine. For larger areas like living rooms, four or five-blade fans might be the better option.

If you’re replacing an old fixture with a ceiling fan, you usually won’t need a permit, but if your electrician runs new wiring for the fixture, you likely will need a permit. Building permits are necessary in most municipalities if you’re making changes to your electrical system, so even if you have partial wiring run to the area and need new wiring installed for added functionality, you’ll probably need a permit. Your electrician should be able to let you know if you need one, and they’ll typically file the paperwork for you.

Hiring an electrician to install a new ceiling fan may be the best course of action. Installing a ceiling fan requires basic electrical and mechanical knowledge. It also requires holding it up with one hand and in an awkward position, making the installation even more difficult. If you’re uncomfortable with these circumstances, your best bet is to hire a professional.

For a 12x12 room, a fan between 36" and 50" will work, as it falls in the range for spaces up to 144 square feet. These size fans provide adequate air circulation and ensure a comfortable environment without being overpowering. Even better, they come in a broad range of styles, offering aesthetics and functionality, making them suitable choices for maintaining an ideal room temperature and enhancing overall comfort.
