Hiring a contractor is always a little nerve-wracking. But after meeting Bill, he helped put things in order in a very logical and easy to understand way. The whole crew was easy to work with with no arrogance - just confidence. The extent of our work was almost a complete first floor remodel with a project span of months. Services completed include interior walls knocked down, studs replaced in many exterior walls, complete kitchen removal and installation, backyard landscape work, new bathrooms down to the studs, stucco work, electrical, hardwood & tile flooring, and more. Bill is competent, confident, professional, and he lights up when talking about how to make kitchens pretty (a must if you have a wife who knows what she wants). He was clear and concise during the entire project that spanned no less than 8 rooms of the house. I would recommend VCI to anyone.

Bill was very communicative, professional and thoughtful in the processs. His workers were considerate of my neighbors also. They cleaned up daily and showed up everyday. In the end, the workmanship was excellent and I would hire him again.

I hired Bill to convert a dining room into an office area which will serve as a bedroom. The work exceeded my expectations. Great work, great crew, and a fair price. True professionals.

Considering the age of the home (over 100 years), where many unknowns were expected and encountered, the job went well. The quality demanded by the contractor was exceptional. Areas that needed updating were not neglected, instead improved using high-quality materials and workmanship. The new edition blends well into the original structure.

Bill and his crew were on top of the job right from the start. His prices are very reasonable and he doesn't mark up materials which is rare and greatly appreciated. The work was done carefully and of high quality. Bill is very responsive to phone, text and email communication. We are already asking him to quote another project.

Once stage one removal of garage was completed and paid for$26000. I went to inspect work. We allowed his guys to use bathroom in house it is vacant but, still has a lot of in laws belongings in home. They left all there trash ie water bottles, McDonald’s wrappers and bags, bail bonds papers, dirt and mud all through the house even in the rooms they had NO business going in.They took food from the pantry. And left Cigarette butts in entry way. The yard had debris ALL throughout it even a 2 x 4 in the tree, they hit the cable wire with the rolloff dumpsters left it hanging 6 feet above the driveway. I called Bill and expressed my concerns he said he would take care of it. But he needed me to leave a key because the one he had must have gotten thrown away in the dumpster. somebody came back I guess they had the key and did a horrible job trying to sweep the floors, and they did pick up the cigarette butts. All the debris was still in the yard even the 2 x 4 in the tree. When I asked Bill about it again this is copy and paste it from his email. “Did you even go into the home I am a little ****** at your attitude and lack of checking out the work we did” We spent the whole day cleaning We should meet there together and see what the heck you are looking at Thanks for the lack of investigation on your part.” He was FIRED at that point! $26000 and I had to clean up his mess. DO NOT HIRE IF YOU WANT WHAT YOU PAY FOR
Response from Varneys Construction Inc

Bill is extremely responsive, scheduled me right away and got the job done in a realistic timeframe. He and his superb employed tradesmen always asked my input on decisions, and always took my ideas to heart. They really did “work for me” throughout the process. If something needed t be improved or redone, no problem or grousing about it. We also had a lot of fun , all of us on the site. But, the quality of workmanship is their legacy. The prior reviews are true and accurate. Never hesitate to hire Bill Varney and his folks to do your job.

Bill said that since it was impossible to estimate the total cost until the demolition was complete but agreed to set a cap at $20,000. The work required demolishing the framing, jacking up the side of the roof in several places, tearing off all the siding and completing repairs. Bill had a crew of 2-3 people working daily for about 3 weeks. The house is better and more valuable. The communicated daily to keep us informed about the process, progression and costs. He came in under budget. There was no set completion time at the outset since the extent of damage was undetermined, but I was satisfied with the entire process. Bill is a great person to work with, honest and conscientious.

Communication was good. I am in the construction industry so understand the processes. Only complaint was cleanliness but they cleaned up after raising the issue a couple of times, and provided a discount for the inconvenience.

Bill and his people do great work. Staff are friendly and reliable, and Bill is very knowledgeable. If you are looking for bottom line lowest cost it probably wont be the best fit; but you get what you pay for and this company is by far the most professional and knowledgeable we have dealt with through several home renovations. We will use them for future projects.

There were good and bad aspects to this remodel. The good: I like the bathroom design and finished project. The crew was nice and tried to keep a clean workspace. Bill provided some good suggestions that we included in the project. General construction work was good - demolition, drywall work, plumbing, electrical The bad: Job was estimated at 3 weeks. final total was 7 weeks with no added scope. Not good project management. Team size was inconsistent. Some days there were several people on the job and other days there may be only one person. I understand that some work has to be done in stages, but I feel that some of this was due to multiple jobs going on at once. Tile work wasn't at the same quality as the rest of the project. I think the tile person/company they normally use wasn't available and the remaining crew did the best they could. Disappointed a tile professional wasn't hired as a sub. This caused some of the overall project delay and need for some tile rework.

If you are looking for the best contractor for the job, Bill Varney and Varney's Construction is the best possible solution; their prices came in at the best and I know the other bidders would have gone well over their bids. Bill and his team are thoughtful, hard-working, good to their word, and exceptional at getting the job done right. See pictures of how they transformed my kitchen below. My summary points of why I really liked them are below for review.
***1. Bill has a meticulous eye for detail and design. Even after my final payment to him, he was still making suggestions on things to run by me such as stainless steel switch plate covers (and considering what type of bar stool design I should think about buying). We completed the contract last week with all money paid and he is still coming out this week on his own (not by my request either) to fix something "that was bothering him and to do one more little touch-up." If that doesn't speak to being good to your word and loyal to perfection on your project, I don't know what does.
***2. He and his company are flexible with your preferences and adapt to your desires. He's great at taking a picture in your mind and actually making it happen.
***3. Open to your ideas but has the sense to tell you nicely when something might look bad. He saved me from a couple possible bad design choices.
***4. He has an excellent knowledge of structural options. I had to remove a load-bearing wall and he was the only 1 of 6 contractors that said he could actually recess it into the roof trusses so that it wouldn't be seen versus having a rafter/beam running through my kitchen (either the others didn’t know how it could be done or they didn’t want the hassle). Either way; he and his team aren’t afraid of hard work and they do it the right way the first time.
***5. His network of specialists (if needed) are inexpensive and do exceptional work (i.e. architects, engineers, etc.). They also show up fast to do the work (2-4 days of him calling them). I had to do a roof penetration for the kitchen which was outside of our arrangement and it only cost $450 (“Winter Park prices” come in at about $750+ to do this type of thing). He also had an engineer/architect sign off and do the plan for the structural changes (removal of the load-bearing wall, etc. for the permit) within a matter of days and it was half of what I found elsewhere for getting an architect/engineer approval on a structural change for City approval.
***6. He and his team work extremely well with the City of Winter Park on permitting. The City of Winter Park/Planning Division was really impressed with the quality of his work and commented on how he went above and beyond what was necessary for their inspections.
***7. He and his team passed all inspections the first time (electrical, mechanical, plumbing – I had the works including bringing in higher Amp line from outside to accommodate the greater electricity usage).
SUMMARY: Varney Construction was the best deal money-wise, had the highest quality work, and finished the job without any effort or hassle on my end. I cannot recommend enough!

We were planning to install laminate flooring to our second floor but we were unable to initially because the subfloor was very uneven. Mr. Bill Varney and his team completed the job in one day, had a great price, and were very professional. We were able to have the laminate installed and it looks great.

Bill responded quickly to my request for a quote. He came to our home at a time that work with my and my husband's schedules. He listened as we explained what work we wanted done and made suggestions based upon his knowledge and experience. Upon leaving, Mr. Varney explained what I could expect to happen next in terms of the scope of work and job quote. We received a detailed quote outlining all the things discussed during our meeting as well as job costs.

Once a permit was obtained the work began. Due to our work schedules, neither my husband nor I were able to be home when the work began however I felt completely confortable with Bill and his crew being in my home. Bill kept in continuous contact with me via text when he was at the house and when he was leaving he made sure to secure the house.

The work progressed in a timely fashion. Some delays were dealt with due to the holidays as well as awaiting custom ordered materials but Bill again kept us aware of any delays. Any issues that came up during the project Bill made sure to address until we were satisfied with the work.

Upon job completion I sent a list of some minor things that needed to be fixed and Bill was back out within a couple days to correct and made sure before he left that I was completely satisfied with his work.

It was a pleasure working with Bill and his crew and in the future we would definitely use his services for additional projects.

I would recommend Bill Varney for any household project, reconstruction, or renovation you have planned. Bill and his crew were very professional. They were on time, treated my house as if it were their own. Bill explained the process at each stage of construction and followed through to ensure success. The entire job was well planned and executed. I enclosed a 11X19 loft area into an extra living room so my children would have a place to play and  watch tv. Bill gave me an excellent rate. He was significantly below every other quote that i received. I would recommend him for any project that you have. In fact, I expect to use him again this summer to redo my office area and Master bath.

I noticed that a section of my front porch overhang was had some wood rot.
Previous to this, I've contacted other contractors for an estimate.  I've had 2 contractors who wasted my time by breaking appointments and 2 other contractors who took several measurements but was too busy to get back to me (after weeks of me following up) with any estimate.
Bill came out and examined my porch and gave a detailed estimate of what work would be required.  He also informed me that more than likely I had some damage inside the wall of my house.  After some demolition work, he was able to get the whole picture of what needed to be done.
Because of the hidden damage, my project did get a bit larger than I had hoped for, but every step of the way, Bill was able to explain what needed to be done next and kept in constant communication with me. We had to replace some of the wood frame that was rotted.  After Bill and his team were done, they drywalled, textured and painted and you could never tell any work had been done.
Bill designed the front porch himself and it looks amazing (a few of our neighbors have complimented).  Now that our porch is replaced, it really improves the look of our home.  Now,we love spending time in the front yard and sitting on our porch.
