"DJ and John did an excellent and thorough job installing a beautiful vinyl fence and gate around the perimeter of my backyard. Because it was a two day job they sectioned off a small area of the yard that allowed my 3 dogs access to a safe & secure fenced in area to relieve themselves. As a senior, recently recovering from major surgery, it would have been extremely difficult for me to walk 3 very energetic dogs for two days, so I can't express how grateful I am that they went to all that extra trouble to make sure my dogs were taken care of and my life was made so much easier in the process. Plus they didn't charge me any extra for that service! They both worked long past dark to make sure my fence was finished on time and cleaned up all the excess debris afterward. I truly believe that the Lord was watching out for me by leading me to hire this company to have my fence installed. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to both friends and family. Thank you DJ and John, God bless you and your families!"

"Very pleased with all aspects from quote, installation and follow-up with H&Y Fence Co. Lee Ann, in the office, was very helpful in answering questions and scheduling the job. Hats off to Diego and Miguel for an excellent installation of the fence and gate. They arrived as scheduled, explained the process, installed the fence and gate without destroying the flower beds and cleaned the property thoroughly after the job was completed, and hauled away the old fence/gate.. I highly recommend H&Y fence company."

"Dennis was great! Same day that I requested a quote, he came out and provided the quote within an hour or two after leaving my house. Plus, we were able to get the fence and gate installed a few days later. Found out about Buckeye from our back neighbor who we went half on for their fence. And the quality is really nice. You definitely want to hire Buckeye Fencing."

Driveway Gates questions, answered by experts

Fence gates sag because they have no support on the latch side of the gate to help hold them aloft. A gate wheel fixes that problem by providing support for that latch side. Remember that the ground must be level in front of the gate so the wheel can roll freely when you open and close it. If the terrain is uneven or slopes, a gate wheel won’t work.

Your wooden gate post hole should be a third to a half of the height of the post. Also, note that the diameter of the post hole should be three times the diameter of the post. You should set the post in concrete to ensure a long-lasting and durable post that will withstand the test of time.

The best under-gate dog barrier is one that extends to the ground. This effectively keeps dogs in and won't give them room to squeeze through. However, dogs that dig can still get under the barrier. Deter digging by paving the ground beneath the gate or filling it in with rocks or gravel. Be careful using wire to extend dog gates, as the sharp ends may cut or hurt your dog's paws.

While it is possible to install a manual gate yourself, it is generally not recommended. Professional installation is strongly advised, especially for automated or large driveway gates. Gates can be extremely heavy, sometimes weighing hundreds of pounds, which makes them bulky and dangerous to maneuver into place. Proper installation requires perfect positioning and balancing to ensure the gate swings smoothly and functions as intended. For automated gates, the wiring is also hazardous and typically requires a licensed electrician. Mistakes during a DIY installation can be costly, as materials alone can average around $1,000. Given the safety risks and the difficulty of achieving a proper setup, it is best to hire a professional gate installer.

Ideally, a gate should be able to swing both in and out. However, if it can only open in one direction, it is generally best for it to swing inward. This is often the safest option, especially for deck gates near steps, as you'll want the gate to swing away from the stairs. An inward swing also prevents the gate from opening into a public space, like a sidewalk, and can be more convenient when carrying heavy items like a wheelbarrow into a garden.

There are exceptions, however. The layout of your property may require a different approach. For example, if your property is on a slope, the gate may not be able to swing inward. You should also ensure the gate can open fully without colliding with any objects or blocking access to other areas. For a backyard garden gate where public access isn't a concern, the direction it swings is largely a matter of personal preference. Finally, always check your local building codes, as they may have specific requirements for which way a gate must swing.
