"They came out quickly and did the dirty work without any complaint. Didn't make us feel stupid for flushing something down the toilet that shouldn't have gone."

"Mr. Butler called because of my inquiry about two of my bathrooms being unuseable. Toilets had backed up into the bathtubs. My third bath was unaffected. He was up in NPR and I am in Hudson. I gave him directions and he arrived within 20 minutes. He had to go on the roof, and then had to dig a hole to find the lower outside cleanout valve. He got everything opened up and was finished within an hour. It was the quoted higher rate of $300, but he wasted no time and we were extremely happy with him and his workmanship. Would be happy to recommend him."

"My toilets and sinks were not flushing or draining without backing up and Jacob snaked the pipes to ascertain the source of the problem. I’m thankful that he was able to help prevent what could have been a huge and very costly mess in my house. He also fixed a leaky toilet seal and replaced a faulty flush valve and flapper. He’s a very knowledgeable professional who was punctual, did excellent work, and kept me informed each step of the process. I will definitely hire him again and recommend him to anyone needing these type of services."

Toilets questions, answered by experts

While you might think that phantom flushes are simply eerie, they are bad for your toilet (and wallet). These flushes indicate a leak somewhere in the toilet system that needs repairing. These leaks can cause damage to your walls, flooring, and even your plumbing system. While one random flush every now and then might not seem like a big deal, leaving it unattended can lead to bigger problems.

You generally cannot replace a 10-inch rough-in toilet with a 12-inch model without making significant plumbing updates. A 12-inch rough-in toilet will not fit a 10-inch rough-in space because the floor drain is in the wrong position. To accommodate the larger toilet, you would need to move the drainpipe, which could cost between $0.75 and $30 per linear foot, plus labor. In most cases, it is more cost-effective and simpler to purchase a new 10-inch rough-in toilet. However, it is possible to install a 10-inch rough-in toilet in a 12-inch space by using a longer connector.

To drain a broken toilet, place towels or plastic sheeting around the base in case of splashing or overflowing. Next, shut off the toilet’s water supply, usually via a valve on the wall behind the toilet. Begin flushing the handle to remove as much water as possible from the tank and the bowl. Don’t flush the toilet if it’s clogged, though. From there, use a large sponge to soak up any remaining water and wring it over a bucket.

Toilet augers are hand-held drain snakes. Most of them come with 3 to 6 feet of cleaning cable and a curved, plastic elbow sleeve to protect your toilet bowl. If your clog does not go beyond the toilet’s wax seal, a 3-foot auger would be sufficient. Otherwise, you may need a 6-foot auger to unclog the drain.

No, your toilet tank should not empty completely when you flush. Although the water level will dip a lot after you flush, it shouldn’t be totally empty. If your tank is empty, you might have issues with your fill valve, float ball, or toilet trip lever. You should check all of your toilet parts to ensure they’re working correctly and make any necessary adjustments.
