"I expected a very expensive job to remove a tree that hurricane Irma had bent, lifting a huge root under the from concrete stoop, making it impossible to open the out swinging front door. He expertly lifted the huge concrete slab and removed the root. This root was well over 12" diameter. The stoop went back into place almost perfectly. I expected that the huge tree was going to have to be removed and he gave me a plan that I had not even entertained. He saved me over $2,700 and I would hire him in a heartbeat. He was there when he said and he cleaned up like it never happened!!"

"After I accepted the proposed job estimate United Tree Service came within a couple of days and completed the job on time and within the estimated cost. Also, this company is very good at clean up; all the tree and plant debris was removed. I especially liked that they had the tools needed to do the job right. We were happy with the results and would recommend this service to any homeowner or company needing a tree cutting service."

"I called Icon Tree Service on a Friday. They came out the same day after finishing the job they were doing. They actually looked at the tree I needed trimmed, quoted a price and did the job right then. My pygmy date palm looks like it's supposed to since Icon Tree Service manicured it. I would definitely recommend them ."

"Service went great. They showed up on time with all the proper equipment. Removed the 3 ugly trees, replaced the 2 beautiful trees. They cleaned up everything, and made the house look brand new. Total time was less than 4 hours. My wife and I are thrilled"

Tree Service questions, answered by experts

Trees don’t usually grow back after being cut down. Some particularly robust tree species may start sending up new stems from a stump to recover, but those stems won’t become a “tree” like before. Generally, trees don’t recover from being entirely cut down, which is why it’s important to be careful when making a decision. When you cut down a tree, it’s a good idea to make plans to remove the stump, even if it’s unlikely to grow back.

As a general rule, the protected area should be about 1½ times as wide as the canopy of the tree’s leaves. This digging measurement can vary by tree species and the age of the tree. Of course, that can be a lot of fencing for larger trees, which is why our first step is about making difficult decisions on which trees to save.

Whether you grind or dig up and remove your tree stump depends on your landscaping goals. Using a stump grinder leaves the root system in place for it to decompose over time, whereas digging up the tree stump removes the roots and the stump. Overall, stump grinding is a far simpler process since you won’t need to deal with the roots. Stump removal will make your yard look like a demolition site, but you’ll have an easier time replanting in the same place as your former tree.

If you’re wondering whether you can plant a tree where the stump was removed, know that the soil conditions won’t be ideal, so you should avoid it. The soil beneath the previous tree will likely be depleted of nutrients, plus there may be roots left behind that will seriously hinder the growth of a new tree. Also, if you use salt or other chemical solutions to kill the stump, these can linger in the soil for months or even years and prevent healthy growth. It’s best to choose a different spot that’s at least three feet away for a new tree, or wait at least a year and thoroughly amend the soil before you plant.

The best way is to start controlling tree height long before it grows too large, via careful pruning through the years. But that’s not always possible. If a tree has become too high or too large, use selective pruning to remove the most troublesome branches, one by one, without topping the tree. Gently shaping a tree like this can, over time, correct problems. You can also find growth inhibitors to spray on a tree to stop it from growing too rapidly, but use these sparingly if at all.
