"After contacting 4 local gutter companies and getting 3 quotes, I decided to go with American Gutter--and I was not disappointed. American Gutter was the only company that drew a detailed map of our house, indicating where gutters, downspouts, and splash guards would be placed.  This company was also the only one to recommend (and rightly so) to install a small gutter section on the second story where it was needed.  Moreover, American Gutter noticed that we needed some soffit repair and provided a reasonable estimate.  In contrast to the other gutter companies, American Gutter was able to do the job shortly after we got the quote (within 1-2 weeks).  Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend American Gutter.   They were highly professional all the way around, from initial contact, the quote, the job, and commitment to continued customer satisfaction.

"Peter installed soffit, fascia and gutters on our new construction project. They were friendly and communicated well about scheduling the work. We ran into a small issue after installation of the gutters and Peter came back within a few days and made the repair. Highly recommended."

Gutter Repair and Replacement questions, answered by experts

No—gutters should be designed and properly installed so they are ready to handle any level of rainflow from your roof. If you notice pooling water around your gutters or on the roof, it’s imperative that you contact a gutter repair pro near you—the slope of your gutters could be off and need adjusting.

When it comes to which gutter material is better, the choice really boils down to what you're looking for in a gutter system. If saving money is the most important factor, then your best option is to go for aluminum gutters. If longevity and durability are more important to you, then copper gutters could be the best fit. If you want to customize the color of your gutters, aluminum takes the cake, but if you're looking for a more natural appearance, copper might be a better choice.

Yes, caulking or sealing your vinyl gutters is a good way to help prevent gutter leaks. When you’re installing gutters, it’s important to overlap the sections to help avoid issues like leaks or drips, but they can still happen. In this case, adding caulk can help. Make sure to use a caulk designed for multiple surfaces, like a silicone-based caulk. You can also purchase a gutter sealant as well, which is specifically designed for this purpose.

The best way to seal gutters is with a combination of waterproof roofing cement and silicone gutter sealant. This powerful duo works to prevent water from escaping through holes and cracks while allowing for breathability. While you can use polyurethane sealants, silicone sealants tend to be more flexible when it comes to climate. Silicone is UV-resistant and bonds well to many surfaces. However, polyurethane sealant bonds better with wood.

Icicles don't necessarily mean your gutters are clogged or bad, but they can indicate an underlying issue. While clogged gutters can cause icicles to form, the problem could also be an ice dam on your roof from poor insulation. In that case, melting snow can refreeze in the gutter even without a clog. Regardless of the cause, the weight of the ice can damage your gutters or even rip them completely off the house. If you are unsure of the underlying problem, it's best to call a roofing company to assess the issue and implement a permanent solution.
