"What a great experience my family had with J & H Stoneworks! Not only was Jaime and his staff professional, they were able to assist us with transporting items in which others in his trade profession could not! We had spent countless hours contacting multitudes of companies to move a crate of heavy items and believed we had exhausted all our options and we were becoming discouraged. Some companies said they could move the items but in the end could not. We were discouraged until we spoke Jaime. Before he agreed to do the job, unlike other companies we contacted, he first took the time to go out to see what the job was to ensure he could accommodate us. J and H was a God-send to us. We were provided a fair cost for the move and within a few hours he worked with us to adjust his schedule to get everything moved and moved the next day! There were no issues on the day of the move. We could tell that he and his employees knew exactly what they were doing! I can not say enough about how much they helped my family resolve an issue we had been dealing with for several months. I recommend J & H to anyone who is looking for a professional, reliable, reasonably priced and personable company that knows how to get the job done. - Casandra Patterson"

"Well the work went alright but they didn't remove the old wood and door. He said just tip the garbage man extra and he'll probably take it away. Didn't work out. What got me though was he charged me an extra 5% for using a credit card which I think is excessive. The last contractor took credit cards and didn't charge me extra. I had already given Steve a deposit for this job though so I was kind of stuck."

"We called Mr. Marku about repairing a home attached shed that had seen better days. He quickly came out and discussed the project with us, took a few photographs and let us know how much the project would be. After my wife and I talked, we agreed this was a very fair price. A week later, Mr. Marku and his wife started on the project. At the end of the first day, we knew we had made a great decision on hiring Marku Construction. Throughout the 3 days they worked, they always provided excellent communication of how the project was going and what the next steps would be. They kept the work area clean when they left at the end of the day and put the small amount of debris out to the street. When the project was complete, we couldn’t believe our eyes. The ramshackle shed that was an embarrassment was now something we could be proud off. The job Marku did with the framing, siding, doors and painting made the shed a structure that can withstand the next 20 years and complement the rest of our home. My wife and I would hire Marku Construction again."

Basement Remodel questions, answered by experts

To determine if your basement walls are suitable for finishing, assess their structural integrity and moisture conditions. Look for any signs of damage, such as cracks, bowing, or excessive moisture. Ensure proper drainage and address any underlying issues before proceeding.

Consult with a professional if you're uncertain about the structural stability or potential risks associated with finishing your basement walls.

In addition to overseeing new home builds, construction managers work on large renovations and major remodels. For example, they may work with designers and oversee the construction of a finished basement, kitchen renovation, or a home addition. They may also oversee large-scale remodels, such as the update of a historic home. Construction managers step into small projects for more specific assistance, such as building budgets and compiling the team.

Some older homes have toilets in the basement to combat sewage backups. This type of toilet, also known as a Pittsburgh potty, acted as a safety valve over the incoming sewer line. If a line backed up, it would back up into the toilet because it was the lowest fixture in the home, keeping it out of sight and away from the finished areas of the house.

Basement toilets were also used by workers with messy jobs, like those who worked in coal mines or steel mills. This way, they could clean up and avoid tracking dirt through their home.

Since DIYing a basement remodel isn't typically advised, there are some ways that you can still save money on this project without putting yourself in danger. Some ways to save money on a basement remodel include:

  • Painting walls yourself versus including in the cost of the remodel

  • Installing light fixtures yourself

  • Choosing prefabricated fixtures, like cabinets, over custom ones

  • Choosing a budget-friendly flooring option, like laminate or vinyl flooring, and add rugs where necessary

The best type of basement ventilation system depends on your budget, the moisture in your basement’s air, and the types of windows you have down there. You should consider all of these factors when choosing a ventilation system. However, the most effective method for basement ventilation is an energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or a whole-house ventilation system, which preheats or precools incoming air from the outside while also managing water vapor.
