"I was very happy with it. It went very smoothly, there were no issues. I live in a neighborhood where a lot of people drive up and down. To clear the lot, it took a lot. I'd say about a dozen huge loads left every day. At the end of each day, the job site was always cleaned up very neatly. He takes a lot of pride in his work and he's very proud of trying to get it where you'll like it. The price was reasonable and competitive with others. He highly exceeded my expectations. I can't say enough good things about him."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Yes, you can excavate in the winter, but it might make the job harder. Frozen ground is harder to dig, and snow or ice can make the work site more hazardous. A contractor may need special equipment and techniques, such as ground-thawing methods, to break through frozen soil. Although winter excavation is possible, it may take longer and be more costly than excavating during warmer months.

Professional installers often include a deep layer of crushed gravel under permeable pavers to allow more runoff to soak through into the soil below. Many installations will include multiple layers of gravel, with coarser aggregate at the base and finer aggregate that sits on top of that bottom layer. Above the gravel, you’ll often find coarse sand that helps reduce paver shifting over time. Some permeable paver designs include a water collection system set into the gravel layer to route runoff to a safe area for disposal.

Errors in site preparation can lead to structural failures or appear costly midway. Professionals ensure detailed, reliable home base development layouts.

The digging depth will depend on the size of the trencher you use. Even smaller units can dig up to 4 feet deep, which is plenty for a DIY job. However, much larger trenchers can reach a depth of 18 feet and are better used by a team of pro contractors, not a single DIYer. As with all home improvement projects, use the right tool for the job and proceed with caution.

Consultation with the local government helps identify necessary permits, avoid project delays or legal issues, and protect project integrity.
