"The workers are knowledgeable courteous and friendly. The new driveway looks great. The difficult area, where my walk meets my driveway, has been modified to direct water away from my walk and garage. The new driveway is level with a slight slope away from my garage. I would rehire these people again if I had another asphalt project."

"Called to schedule washing of my mom's house in early April but I was told it would be 4-5 weeks.  The owner called me is early May to update scheduling, saying he would get to it but was running a few weeks behind. They called on June 9th and said they would be in the area that day and were ready.
My mom said the three-man crew did a great job.  She said she can't remember the house being so clean.  She said the driveway is so bright that you need sun glasses. She was impressed with the crew's work ethic and friendliness.  They had to move some potted plants and picnic furniture to complete the job but returned things to their place.  She was happy with the work and price and said she would use them again.  If she's happy, I'm happy.

"Fantastic. Mr Dan Parks is the best contractor I have ever hired. He is hands on and does the work himself with his trusted skilled workers. We had a basic 3 foot cube for a shower. He built a complete new 6 foot long double shower with a bench seat. All new floor to ceiling porcelain tile, with rain forest spray. New Granite counter top, back splash and shower bench seat. Beautiful job! Clean, quick, organized and far under bid competitors. Dan Parks is a great guy and a former major and minor league baseball player. He does it all and I won't use anyone else!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Asphalt is made of aggregate materials (sand, rocks, and gravel) and bitumen, a viscous, petroleum-based, waterproof substance. These materials are mixed together at extremely high temperatures to form asphalt.

Think of the street as a way to capture all the elements on either side of the road, including the road—a street encompasses the homes or other buildings, the trees, and the road of a given area as defined by the beginning and end of the street on a map. A roadway, however, is the component of the street where cars travel.

While blacktop is a type of asphalt, the terms should not be used interchangeably, as not all asphalt qualifies as blacktop. The primary differences are in their composition, production process, and ideal applications. Blacktop contains more stone than other types of asphalt and is heated to a higher temperature during production—300°F or more—while hot-mix asphalt is heated to between 275°F and 300°F. The ratio of bitumen (a tar-like crude oil) is a key differentiator, though sources vary: some state blacktop has less bitumen, making it less durable, while others claim it has a higher ratio. Due to these differences, asphalt is generally more durable and better for high-traffic areas like highways and streets, while blacktop is more suitable for playgrounds and residential driveways. For a driveway project, it is best to consult a professional to determine the most appropriate material.

This creates a risk for your driveway to fail after asphalt curing because it doesn't have a lasting bond with the surface. In order to get asphalt to perform as intended, it's necessary to prepare the dirt surface correctly first. The loose soil base under the new driveway must be compacted until it is stable enough to support the weight of the asphalt.

New asphalt typically needs 24 to 72 hours to dry before it can handle light foot traffic and careful driving. Although it may appear solid after a few days, the full curing process, where the asphalt reaches its peak strength, takes much longer—generally from 30 days to a year.

During this extended curing time, the surface remains relatively soft and can be damaged by heavy vehicles, sharp objects, or high temperatures. To protect your investment, it's best to avoid parking heavy machinery on the asphalt until it has fully cured.

The exact time required for drying and curing depends on several factors, including the weather, the specific asphalt mix, and its thickness. For the most accurate advice tailored to your situation, consult with your asphalt contractor.
