"This is our second time using One of a Kind Carpenter. They are great to work with from start to finish (calling to book an estimate all the way to completion of project). For this project, we had our exterior crawl space openings all redone as well as remodeling our laundry area in our house. Our home is almost 100 years old, and Chad made sure that all of the changes looked as if they belonged in the house. He made sure to match the custom crown molding in the house, and even went as far as custom creating jeweled doorknobs to match the other jeweled doorknobs in th home. The team was very professional, always on time, and, most importantly, did exactly what we wanted (and more). We will be using their services again!"

"So the nest has a bad design where it draws the power from one of the wires that also allows it to control the ac to turn on and off.  Of course we didn't do our research initially when we bought the thermostat.  We began to notice that the house was not cooling as efficiently as when we first set it up and contacted their support.  The technician on the other line finally determined that we need to get a dedicated wire to power the Nest and to contact a Nest certified technician to set it up for us, since we were not familiar with a/cs and wiring, and they'd reimburse us for the service.
I contacted two different companies in the area, and explained my situation.  Since we already had three different unused wires for the Nest to draw powers from, all we need was a technician to come out, go to the other end of the wire and connect it to the air handler.  One company said their service fee is $150, and then additional 90+ for the additional hours.  I contacted Westbrook, had to talk to the service manager, and then he quoted me $99 for the service fee and he said we would 99% be done within that first hour.  There was a bit of a runaround to get the actual scheduling done, as the service manager said he'd have someone call me to schedule the appointment, and I waited 2hrs+ before I called the company again to schedule.  The lady on the line said the actual scheduler will call me back with making the appointment.  So about 30 mins later (while I was outside walking the dog) the scheduler left a message and told me my appointment would be the next day after 2pm, and the technician would call me when he was 45mins away.
Next day, sure enough around 5pm, the technician called me that he was 45 mins away, which gave me plenty of time to gate my crazy dogs up in the living room.  He called me again when he was right outside and we explained the situation again.  He knew exactly what we were talking about and what needed to be done.  He was efficient, courteous, and professional, without being pushy and trying to upcharge anything.  He looked at our unit outside, tidied up a couple of things, recommended that we upgrade our capacitor to save money, which we courteously declined since we had a pool pump to replace the next day, and went on his merry way after paying for his service.
He left us his business card so we will definitely contact him again in the future when we do have the funds and the time to change the capacitor (or when we have to replace the unit -which should be soon since it's about 10 years old).

Storm Shelters FAQs, answered by experts

Yes, many kinds of building permits exist for various projects in and outside your home. Each city sets the permit categories, but they typically cover new construction, alterations, and demolition. For example, you will need a different permit to finish a basement than you would tear down the patio.

Building a house is generally more expensive upfront than moving an existing one. However, the total cost depends on factors such as location, size, materials, labor, and permits. Moving a house can incur significant expenses for transportation, permits, site preparation, and renovations. On the other hand, building a new house allows for customization and may have lower long-term maintenance costs.

Local zoning laws and building codes will determine whether you can build a guest house in your backyard. These laws may limit the potential location of the guest house on your lot or the size and look of the structure. If your lot isn’t large enough, you may not be able to build a guest house at all. Speaking with a local home addition company can help you learn about the local regulations and your other options, such as adding an ADU onto the main house.

Adding a storm shelter can increase the value of a home if you live in an area prone to intense storms. According to the Federal Alliance for Safe Homes, safe rooms can increase the home's sale price by 3.5%. That’s about $10,500 on a $300,000 home, which could be a 100% ROI or more if you build a storm shelter that’s on the smaller side.

Deciding whether to buy a prebuilt fireplace kit or build one from scratch comes down to aesthetics, available space, and budget. Many homeowners like the convenience and lower cost of prebuilt options—around $1,500—versus the involved planning and construction of a larger fireplace. Another bonus: you can usually move prebuilt units. Custom projects are more common when homeowners have access to a larger budget and more area in the yard to place the fireplace.
