"My wife checked out this company out before we called them. We needed to have new insulation installed due to a recent repair to an air duct our home. I called a few places for a quote and this company offered the better price with a guarantee. They did what they said and we are happy with the results. Recommended."

"These guys did a great work at my place. Our attic went from having no insulation, no proper air circulation and having foul odor to insulated, clean and comfortable. They had good service as well with flexible scheduling, polite and professional staff and very fair price. I won’t look for another company for insulation and duct services. Would recommend to my friends."

Below is the original review that was completed before Amtek showed their professionalism and concern for customer satisfaction and corrected the situation.

Original Review:

I think Amtek is a victim of their success.  I have a service contract for my AC, and in the past all my dealings (cleanings, etc.) were very satisfactory.  On October 24th my electric bill that was almost 4 times higher than normal.  Florida Power & Light verified that I had a surge at my home that lasted more than 24 hours.  As a result, the AC compressor was not going off; the surge had probably burned out the thermostat.  I ordered a new Honeywell programmable thermostat from Amazon (on sale from $100 to $55).

I contacted Amtek, explained that I had an electric surge and that the compressor was not turning off.  They scheduled the service call, then tried to reschedule late in the day when the technician was due.  Technician came out, checked the system and verified that the thermostat was fried.  He refused to install the new thermostat I had purchased because it was not purchased from Amtek. Since I was stuck, I had little choice but to agree to have them install a new thermostat from their stock - $225.

The technician was new and did not seem to be very knowledgeable about the electronics of the air handler system - he failed to identify a resistor in the air handler electronics.  Luckily my neighbor is a mechanic, was there to explain the electronics in the air handler to the technician and suggested the technician test the resistor.  The technician stated that was a good idea and my neighbor showed him how to test the resistor.  it was fine.

The Amtek technician did determine that the motherboard on the air handler was also fried, but never noticed that, as a result, the heating system was operating and would not shut down.  The technician informed us that replacing the motherboard would cost $785 and recommended a whole new system for $5,250.  When asked about the possibility of just replacing the air handler rather than the entire system, the technician stated that would void the 10-year warranty on the AC system.

I decided to get a second opinion, paid the Amtek technician the outrageous $225 for the thermostat and called Boyle AC, a local company near my home that also carries Rheem.  We did not tell Boyle the information we had been given by the Amtek technicia.  Boyle came out, verified that the old thermostat had been bad, inspected the new thermostat and reinstalled the new thermostat because the Amtek installation appeared shoddy with lots of extra wiring.  Boyle also verified that the air handler motherboard was fried and Boyle determined that the heating system was staying on as a result, causing a big increase in electical usage.  Boyle replaced the motherboard and charged me a total of $175 for the service call, diagnosis, fixing the thermostat installation, and installing a new motherboard in the air handler.  The system is now running great.

Insulation questions, answered by experts

Insulating your ducts offers several benefits, including:

  • Improved energy efficiency: Duct insulation prevents energy losses, reducing heating and cooling costs.

  • Cost savings: Lower energy bills make insulation a cost-effective investment.

  • Environmental benefits: Enhanced efficiency reduces your carbon footprint.

  • Consistent comfort: Insulated ducts help maintain a stable indoor temperature.

  • Better indoor air quality: Reduced allergens and pollutants improve air quality.

Yes, you should insulate behind shower walls. Insulating helps prevent heat loss, which keeps the shower or tub from getting too cold and helps maintain a comfortable temperature in your bathroom. Additionally, proper insulation and air sealing can help prevent wall rot and moisture buildup. It is recommended to use a high R-value rated foam insulation combined with a vapor barrier.

Glass fibers are often used in HEPA filters because of their high efficiency, durability, and thermal stability. Some HEPA filters are made with synthetic fibers, but they may not be as effective. While there is some fiberglass shedding, as long as the HEPA filter is intact and not cut open, the amount of fiberglass released by a HEPA filter is well below the breathable particulate matter.

Structural insulated panels and rigid foam boards have the highest R-value of any insulation that contractors commonly use, with R-values reaching up to around 8.0. These types of insulation are best in extremely cold climates, but they’re generally preferred for new construction, as they can be challenging to retrofit. Blown-in and loose fill insulation provide the next best insulative value, provided the installation is done properly. It’s important to choose an insulation type that meets your needs based on climate, as maximizing R-value may not always be financially worthwhile if you live in a moderate climate.

Reduces energy costs, improves comfort, and prevents ice dams in winter.
