"Southern Rust Woodworks has the best custom built products around. I have several pieces he has made for me, and I get asked all the time who did them and how to contact him. He can make anything you want! Or if you donâ t have an idea, he has great ideas himself. My house is basically a Southern Rust Woodworks showcase. Love all my pieces and they are excellent quality. Love all his products!!!"

"GS Painting is by far the ABSOLUTE BEST contractor I have ever hired in all my 50 years of home ownership! The company owner, Garry, not only demonstrated the highest standards of punctuality, knowledge, and skill, but he also exhibited a strong commitment to excellence in his meticulous attention to detail and his sheer talent in both carpentry and painting. He was extremely pleasant to work with, and he kept me informed about the work and his progress throughout every phase of the project. At 80 years of age I especially appreciated his respect for my precautions about the Covid pandemic, patiently honoring my request for communication through emails and texts in order to avoid face-to-face contact (when that would have obviously been an easier path for him to take). He went far beyond what most workers might have done in facing a 25-year-old home with multiple examples of untended wear-and-tear, each of which he diligently studied, identified the root cause, formulated a workable plan for correcting it, and accomplished a finished product that totally returned my home to its true market value. I simply cannot say enough positive comments about Garry’s workmanship to capture how pleased I am with the final result of his work. By all means I would not only hire him again but I would deliberately seek him out to do any job needed — my trust level in his skill is that great. Garry is a true craftsman who takes tremendous pride in his work. I am grateful to Angie’s List for connecting me with this dedicated and talented contractor. He is a definite asset to your service!"

"This is to express my wife and I sincere appreciation for the exceptional work Mark Daly and the family owned business ( DALY STONE DESIGN. LLP ) recently completed on the remodeling of our living room fireplace. Our initial consultation with Mark (owner) we felt a genuine connection and trust, Mark and his entire team professionalism combined with your evident dedication to quality craftsmanship put our minds at ease throughout the entire process. Finally, the fireplace is a showstopper. It has completely modernized our living room and has become a favorite gathering spot for our family, We were very fortunate to have had Mark as our contractor and are happy to serve as a reference for any future clients."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

You should avoid drilling or cutting into load-bearing beams because removing material will weaken it and increase the risk of structural damage or even collapse. If you do need to drill into a load-bearing beam, speak with a structural engineer first to discuss where it’s safest to drill and the width and depth of the bit that’s safe to use.

Yes, Corian® and other solid surface countertops can be cut with standard woodworking tools like a circular saw or a jigsaw, but using the correct blade is crucial for the best results.

The recommended blade is a tungsten carbide-tipped blade, often called a solid-surface planer or triple chip grind blade. This type of blade is hard enough to cut through the material effectively. For a jigsaw, a fine-tooth down-cutting blade should be used.

It is important to note that a diamond blade is not necessary. Diamond blades are designed for harder materials like natural stone, concrete, or brick, and Corian is not a natural stone.

Using blades designed for wood is not recommended as they can cause microfractures that weaken the countertop's edges. While a tungsten carbide blade provides a much cleaner cut, the resulting edge will still be rough and must be sanded and smoothed to prevent microfractures from developing over time.

Spindles on a deck may also be called balusters or pickets. While not as important to the structural support of the deck as the rail posts, they play a critical role in ensuring the deck is safe to use by closing in large gaps in the railing. For this reason, balusters must be no more than 4 inches away from one another.

Board and batten is a type of wainscotting that uses wider boards that are placed vertically, and it has a much more rustic aesthetic than wainscotting. Common wainscotting styles are raised-panel, flat-panel, and beadboard. Wainscotting is more intricate and will typically use more elegant, subtle trims compared to the more farmhouse-inspired boards of board and batten styles.
