"I hired New Way Pavers to extend my driveway roughly 300 square feet. There were no pushy sales tactics involved and the quote was fair. They showed up on time with everything they needed and the project began and ended without an issue. During the job I did request a slight adjustment to the angle of the driveway and they were happy to address my concern. I will definitely hire them again and I've also recommended them to my neighbors. Isiah..."

"Sunnys Concrete is an outstanding company & I was lucky to locate them. I had been searching for two years for someone experienced in stamped concrete with no success. I saw different reviews on Facebook & wrote in a comment about locating someone who could help me & a happy customer referred me to Kenny Spivey whom I immediately called. He came out the next day & gave me an estimate for repairing & resealing my stamped concrete walkway, driveway & patio & scheduled the job. My job required special skills as it involved repair work done from a previous contractors work. Kennys workers were meticulous, through & very detail orientated & took their time working continuously without even a break. When the job was completed Kenny himself came out to inspect their work & ask my opinion as well. I told him how happy I was to have found him & was delighted with the work that was done. I would highly recommend Sunnys Concrete to anyone needing a professional job done on a variety of concrete & related projects knowing they will get quality work in a timely manner. "The company was fabulous! All my questions were answered and they even worked with us on a last minute schedule change. The driver was very professional bringing the load of dirt. He was a driving pro and got that huge dump truck between a double gate, in one swing the first try. Super impressed. Iâ ve already recommended them to anyone who asks about any dirt work."

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Sometimes, when people talk about asphalt driveways, they’re actually referring to asphalt concrete, which is a completely different compound. Asphalt concrete is asphaltic cement combined with sand or grit. It is significantly more lasting and durable than regular asphalt but also much more expensive. If you’re considering using asphalt concrete, ask an asphalt company for their expert opinions.

Asphalt edging secures the sides of your driveway to prevent crumbling and cracking over time. Most driveways have edges with a 45-degree grading. This helps transfer some of the stress from the asphalt to the ground underneath. If your driveway doesn’t have proper edging, the pressure from your car may break down the edges over time.

In most cases, you don’t need a permit to repave your driveway, although some exceptions exist. If you’re widening your driveway and plan on widening the apron as well, you’ll usually need a permit from the Department of Transportation in your area. This permit costs between $50 and $300 in most cases. Most municipalities will also require a certified and insured contractor do the work relating to the apron and curb cut. You can contact your building department or ask your paving company if you need a permit. Your driveway professional will usually pull the permit for you.

The decision to repair or replace your driveway depends on the extent of the damage. If your driveway has a few small cracks, a simple repair will do the trick. If you see larger cracks and potholes, it may be time to consider resurfacing or replacement. Resurfacing is a great option if more than 25% of the surface is damaged, but if the damage is extensive—deep cracks or significant sinking—it’s best to replace the driveway entirely. A new driveway, with proper care, can last decades while patching or resurfacing might only hold up for a few years before needing more attention.

Instead of a set number of types, asphalt comes in variations designed for different needs. Some are categorized by temperature—hot mix, warm mix, and cold mix. Others are sorted by composition, like dense-graded, gap-graded (such as Stone Matrix Asphalt), porous, and mastic asphalt. There are also modified versions with added compounds like polymers, rubber, or emulsions. Instead of focusing on a number, it may be more useful to understand how contractors customize asphalt for durability, climate, and traffic conditions.
